hi, i do extension 2 maths and i rlly love maths in general.
the big maths course people always discuss afaik is actuarial studies, but, looking into it, it's mainly statistics or financial maths, which was my least favourite part of adv (i did accelerated 3u) and so i really dont want to do it at uni bc i feel like i would hate it.
however, i really enjoy maths and, personally, i like to think im good at it, so i would really want to do something at uni with maths.
does anyone have any good course recommendations that i would ACTUALLY enjoy? 🙏🙏

I'm no expert but I think actuarial requires you to learn a wide range of maths - if you look at the 1st year course classes at UNSW, it's like a mix of 3U and 4U maths. If you love maths, you could look into that a lil further.

Otherwise, do you enjoy the physics side of maths in 4U, like mechanics and stuff, and do you study any sciences? If yes, you could do something related to physics like engineering. There are lots of different options there. Another option is computer science, but I won't push you into that field bc I've heard that you need to be really passionate to do well (it's super saturated).

And if you love maths that much, you could even just do a mathematical sciences degree

i do physics and chem (idk how to get the subjects on all of my posts like you have lol) and i really like those too, but i feel like being a researcher is a bad industry to go into since ive heard theyre really badly paid compared to the work they need to do.
i havent looked into engineering enough bc i did engineering studies at the start of y11 but dropped bc i hated it so i kinda assumed engineering at uni would be similar, but idk tbh
also comp sci sounds really interesting to me, i was gonna do software but they didnt end up offering it in my year bc not enough people selected it, im just really worried that it wouldnt lead anywhere in the future, job-wise, just based off what ive heard around lol
also i could be wrong abt any of this so PLEASE correct me, i'd actually love it if i was wrong bc it would mean one of these degrees would be a good choice lmao

Hmm I see... by subject choices I feel like engineering could suit you. I never did engineering studies, so I'm not sure how much it reflects actual engineering, but surely it wouldn't represent all the different types of engineering. There are so many - electrical, mechanical, mechatronic, aeronautical, chemical, civil, environmental etc. Maybe try researching them a bit? I'm honestly in no position to give you careers advice, but I also really enjoy maths and don't mind stats/financial maths so I'm actually planning to do finance or actuarial.

What aspects of maths do you enjoy?

yea i think i'll def look more into engineering, thank you!
from ext1, i kind of enjoyed the whole thing lmao, i really liked calculus and further trig.
from ext2, ive loved complex numbers, im also EXTREMELY hyped for further integration, im just not the biggest fan of proof which im pretty sure features in a lot of pure maths later on

Yeah, engineering is the only thing that seems to fit everything you've said

Econometrics or Macroeconomics if you're going to do Econ at uni

studying straight up mathematics is also an option, and if ur do well then it can actually be quite employable in finance etc

if you’re not interested in that there’s also always the option of studying whatever and then just doing maths electives on the side

just do a form of engineering and dual degree in math
yea this is probably the way to go, thank you, im just wondering if double degrees are worth it? ive heard people saying it's kind of a scam to get another year worth of payments out of people 😭

im doing that in uni rn, and its known for being ridiculously hard. i don't think this person would like it tho, cause at least for first yr courses, econ has one stats based course (legit just going deeper into the shit we learn in 3u binomial distributions bs) and one algebra/calculus based course, which is apparently more enjoyable for math lovers. from what this guy is saying, he would love engineering. cause engo has way more maths related stuff which is more "fun" to do (because stats and shit is absolute boring). my mates are doing engo and they said the first yr maths courses at unsw are pretty hard but very rewarding in the end.

how abt data science?

apparently they have the hardest math subjects: Mathematics 1A and Higher Mathematics 1A (assumed knowledge is 4u math)
also u'll have to do 4 math subjects in ur first yr: 1A/ higher 1A (4u math) and 1B/higher 1B (statistics, calculus, algebra)

i just know this bc my sister is strongly considering data science (25 hsc graduate) and she told me abt the subjects
u can look into it more but as i remember u only do math the first yr then ur 'not allowed' to do math anymore - becomes english/social science focus

i just looked through the unsw handbook and it seems pretty cool but a lot of these subjects (data science, actuarial, macro whatever that person said, etc) seem to come with a lot of economics, idk if you or anyone else would know but is that like extremely hard or is it kinda fine? im not the biggest fan of business-y stuff so im just wondering if i'd be able to survive it without wanting to end it all lol

I failed Econometrics and Macroeconomics at least once for both.
