I didn't know the answer to this question when I first saw it, how do I workout this question? What general knowledge do I need to know before attempting this question?

$The answer is (D). All you need to know is that 1 character is 1 byte, and that there are 1024 bytes in 1 kilobyte.$

$So denoting the number of characters in one record by $n$, in the 1000 records, there are $1000n$ characters, which is $1000n$ bytes. And one byte is $\frac{1}{1024}$ kilobytes, so $1000n$ bytes is $1000n\times \frac{1}{1024}$ kilobytes. In other words, we have multiplied $n$ by 1000, and then divided by 1024 to get the total number of kilobytes for the 1000 records. So the answer is (D).$

R'd that last post. 1 character = 1 byte. 1 Kilobyte contains 1024 Bytes. So to get the equation you get the Number of Chars in a record, times it by 1000 (due to there being 1000 records). That gets your the size in Bytes, to get it in Kilobytes, you divide by 1024
Overall Equation (No. Chars in record) x 1000 divide by 1024
