I go to an average ranking high school and i was wondering if it is still possible to achieve an ATAR above 97 even if my school ranking is not that good compared to the top and what ranking within my school do i have to be?

1. You're only in year 10
2. My school ranking is in the 200's and we still get kids who get in the 90's.

For a school rank in the hundreds, you would needs to be at least dux, if not top 3 or 4 in the grade, to get 97.

I know someone in a ~220 rank school that got 98, if that means anything. I don't think he was an outlier in his cohort, since a few people got around his range.

Yeah you can, just be dux :)

In a rank 250+ school you *generally* would need to be dux for 97+. For a rank 150-250, you'd want to be dux or close to it. Top 150 schools have more leeway.

My school is ranked ~150 and a couple years back someone got 99.65, if I recall correctly. (or was it 99.85?)

My school is one of the lowest ranking schools. But, don't let your school's rank put you off. Those who will and want to work hard and achieve, will do so wherever they are, no matter how their school ranks. An example of this is a girl who got a 99 ATAR in my crappy-ranking school!! There were also a few that got high 90s. Maintain top 3 rank and you are safe. :)

Hmmm.. just curious. Are your initials Y.M?

Anyway, you're only in Year 10. Remember that once everyone hits Senior school, serious competition begins for rankings, haha.
Those "lazy" kids will probably begin to study really, really hard and it'll be difficult to even attain an "average" rank.

A high ATAR is always possible, no matter what school ranking.
