you won't be the only one, go alone and you'll be more likely to make conversation with people...

join some clubs, UNDIES is pretty cool... good bunch of students to get in with if you like to party 'cause a lot of them live on campus and it's not uncommon for them to party 3-4x a week.

well that probably depends on what course you're in. last year i went to mine (biomed) and it was important because there was a lot safety things that had to be gone through, like for the labs etc. and some of the intros you had to be there to do or you couldn't start first week lab work. the faculty stuff and speeches are pretty boring though, granted
