This message was authorised by: Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Schwartz.

Dear Staff and Students

You are cordially invited to attend the Inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Debate, to be held on August 15 at 5pm in Building E7B Courtyard.

We have some great speakers lined up for this event, which we plan to be the first in a regular series of stimulating debates to be supported by the Vice-Chancellor.

The inaugural debate proposition is: That capitalism is bad for the soul.

Speaking for the proposition are acclaimed author, public intellectual and director of the Australia Institute, Dr Clive Hamilton; distinguished Macquarie academic, author and cultural economist Professor David Throsby; and Macquarie student debater Ms Luigina Webb.

Speaking against the proposition are Professor Peter Saunders, author and Social Research Director at the Centre for Independent Studies who oversees the Centre's Social Foundations program; distinguished academic and Dean of Macquarie Graduate School of Management, Professor Roy Green; and Macquarie student debater Mr Thomas Hosking.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Schwartz, will chair the debate.

Audience members will also be given the opportunity to express their views.

Drinks and finger food will be available for guests immediately following the debate.

To RSVP please go to: https://www.vc.mq.edu.au/vc-debate-registration.php

Or Email: emma.norton@mq.edu.au Telephone: (02) 9850 6079

As places are limited please ensure to RSVP.

Bad timing. Busy that night. Would be awesome to see though. Last uni debate I want to was between Windschuttle and Reynolds. So much anger.

Funny how they had to give lengthy credentials for the speakers....I find they only do that when we don't know who they are...which goes against the initial aim of making them sound well known

Theoretically, credentials are irrelevant; a young child could have the same logical arguments as a professor and they would both be equal.

That being said, noone watches a debate for a logical argument. :)

i think we could do a good one of these about climate change.

get tim flannery on board, michael duffy (ex-pres of mac enviro club now Radio National broadcastor and proud global warming skeptic)

some argumentative students.

maybe that drew fraser guy too, he was controversial.

Maybe we can also fit 1/6th of the prospective student representative body in, as well! :D

yeah why not! =)

o.k. so maybe 632 is too many student representatives for one council. maybe 31,000 students is too many students for one uni, and just maybe 6.5 bil is too many people for one planet.

gotta work with what you've got yeah?

Fuck Tim Flannery, Al Gore and the global warming they rode in on.

[Not really, the little devil on my shoulder just felt like saying that.]

according to the debate:

capitalism is bad for the soul

it was pretty tight though, pretty much half/half in the audience.
