Basically it's a fancy way of describing prefixes and suffixes for organic carbon compounds,

e.g. Hexane - Hexene - Hexyne.

And the rules applied to deriving the chemical formulas for these substances.

This may not be everything, but it is definitely a part of it.

IUPAC nomenclature is basically an internationally standardised way of naming organic compounds using systematic rules. Before IUPAC, we referred to compounds by their common name, e.g vinyl chloride.

You don't really need to know the details of what IUPAC nomenclature is, but rather its rules and how to name/draw organic compounds.
