ok, so I was going through the add/delete programs thing on my computer, getting rid of search toolbars and the like, and I think I must have deleted something I shouldn't have, because now I can't access the net...
I dial up, and get the connection, but no pages load, and I can't open MSN, and its like my computer isn't recognising I have a connection.

Any tips?

Try to restore a System Restore point.
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
Try one before you uninstalled stuff.

ok, so the latest update...the system restore doesn't work, every time I run it, it comes back that it was incomplete and no changes have been made to my system.
The ipconfig thing, I was going to take a screen dump but totally forgot...I was running through a troubleshooter program and it said to do it, and mentioned something about 'packets' and needing 4 of them...well when I ran the cmd thing, there was no mention of packets, even though I was connected to the net...

well if hipsta_jess doesn't get something similar to the above - ie. 4 returned packets with 0% loss, then she's not on

but first we want to see if it's actually communicating with the optus side of things.

To avoid screwing something up like that again, just use two simple things that can be found with 2 simple google searches.

Spybot search and destroy
and
Adaware

Use these programs to get rid of those unwanted pop-ups and search bars that randomly install themselves rather than going though Add/Remove programs. A firewall and virusscanner would be good too

i had a similar experience recently... i uninstalled a certain spyware program, and i couldn't access the internet. thing is, i can't remember what i did to fix it.

i'd say your best chances would be to reinstall internet explorer, or to use another internet browser.

thing is, you need the windows xp cd. if you have it, put it in the cdrom drive and go to start>run>type in "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf" and press enter. follow the prompts.

Well, you're definitely connected to the internet.


And to the person who suggested getting another browser....kinda hard for her since she can't exactly connect to a website to download it =p


Hrmm try this:


Goto Start Menu --- > Settings ---> Double click on your 'Network Connections' tab.

This should open up your dial-up icon thingy.

Right click the icon, and select 'Properties'.

This should open up a window with various tabs, goto the one named 'Networking'.

Near the middle of the window there should be something saying:

'This connection uses the following items:

followed by boxes next to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Tick the box if its un-ticked. If it's ticked then...well tell us what that part looks like anyway =p

I uninstalled IE, with no effect. I also downloaded Firefox and installed it, but it won't open for me.
