I loved him in Edward Scissorhands , Sleepy Hollow , The Ninth Gate and Pirates of the Caribbean

Yes it was, but if you haven't seen any of his other roles then you're lacking.

Johnny Depp's best performance and role was in PotC. The best movie he played a supporting role in was Oliver Stone's 'Platoon'. The best movie he played a leading role in was 'Donnie Brasco'. Yeah I'm a fan, not the biggest fan, but he does play very interesting and enjoyable characters. In a similar mold to Val Kilmer (see Tombstone if you haven't seen it, his performance in it is comparable to Depp's in PotC in that he steals absolutely every scene he's in) actually.
