In our recent chem assessment NO ONE got below a mark of 12/15 and there are 22 people in the course.

While this is great, does it mean that if we perform badly in the external exams that the entire class gets dragged down in terms of our moderated assessment mark???

In the HSC exam, if it turns out that everyone performed poorly then yes you'd have to expect a lower moderated assessment mark.

This is because it -could- of been said that that particular assessment was too easy as a result the students achieve a higher mark. To ensure that the assessment mark is fair throughout the state, the Board of Studies will moderated these marks based on exam performance, your rank and relative difference in marks between the students.

Hence, low exam mark as a whole = low moderated assessment mark.

To clarify - your marks don't mean anything as actual numbers.

They are only used to determine the rank order of students in your class, and the relative differences between those students.

It won't matter whether the marks of your class are spread between 10 and 40 or between 60 and 90. The HSC exam will be used to put the marks on the appropriate scale.

it means your relative differences are going to be fairly close together, so you are all spaced fairly close together
