Hi there, it's the Historian branching across from the 180 discussion board. With rumours that the 180 site is facing extinction - I thought i better visit a new discussion board. So here I am.

But hey, I couldn't avoid taking the opportunity for a free plug.

The Lachlan Review weekly newsletter is now available online:
www.lachlanreview.org

You can post comments there - but there is no discussion board (and never will be - I don't have time to moderate stuff anymore). So, check out the website, share your thoughts - discuss it here.

btw if you're in a club at uni - you can still advertise your events for free in the lachlan review - starting up again in O-week. And I will be looking for people to write new articles (approx. 500 words).

The Historian -- I am the treasurer of the new filmsoc and am on the executive board. As a new incarnation, we are looking to market ourselves as much as we can.

The issue with advertising in your newspaper is that I really (and the members agree with me) don't want the image of Leftism lingering around my club's name like a bad smell.

Are you looking to change your direction with The Lachlan Review, or is it going to remain a totally opposition student paper?

With your dedication, I really think that you could do much better than loud-mouthed articles by John Bransgrove which really are 'Di Yerbury is satan.' repeated about fifteen times.

Of course as a club, we'd be willing to support your great work, but we really don't want to be thrown into the 'Left trash' pile that John, 180, The Greens, and queerspace have been appropriately thrown into.

Rob. (I don't know if you remember me, I'm the larger guy with glasses and longer light hair -- I helped you put up posters once or twice...)

Re: Lachlan Review Online

Direction of Lach Rev 2006

One of the main aims has always been to advertise club & soc events for free. No restrictions. I'm happy to advertise young libs events and even css events.

There is always a disclaimer pointing out that clubs & societies appearing may not share the opinions of the newsletter or of other clubs in the newsletter. This was at the request of the psych club. It was also pretty obvious - just based on the range of clubs advertising in the newsletter last year (eg. MU singers, Dramac, Queerspace, Coptic Society, Lacuna, Chess Club, Ultimate Frisbee, EFS, Assoc, Affinity etc...) . ( So - I guess what i'm saying is that advertising a club event would not be seen as endorsement of the views espoused by the newsletter - your club would not get tarred - just as clubs advertising in SAM's publication don't get tarred with the "corrupt & over-commercialised" tag).

However, if you were to promote or distribute the Lachlan Review at filmsoc events - that would be a different story. That would seem like endorsing the editorial views expressed in it. So having originally avoided answering your question - now I must...

I want to cast light on the dubious activities undertaken by MUSC and Di Yerbury, Brian Spencer etc. BUT with VSU coming, Di leaving, then hopefully there will be less abuses of power (or less relevant/interesting ones). I am not going to search for corruption. So - the direction of the newsletter really depends on the what happens at mac this year + what people write. eg. I'm keen to publish more satire by Gabe D. Beaver.

Does that help explain my likely direction for 2006?

Re: Lachlan Review Online

btw. I did BA/LLB, with history major - mainly early Christian studies + languages. Honours in Law - and lived at Lindfield Last Year - near UTS Kuringai. ... (do you know Winchester Ave?)

Will the new Filmsoc reintroduce Friday night doubles?
I remembering paying $7 and watching two movies in Mac Theatre on a Friday night. I didn't go often - but it was always good atmosphere when I did.

That's interesting! Thanks for clarifying.

Yup, a friend lives there.

We're planning on it. Our first screening will be on Friday the 1st March, and will be free.

The PR company along with Movies at Macquarie, Ryde City Council and us are screening Sideways at about 8:00pm on Friday 3rd of March, so we're going to show a free film before that with a BBQ.

Every fortnight after that, we'll be doing a double. We're going to be doing several thematic doubles, like historical films (so we can get the uber-awesome Marnie Hughes-Warrington to speak), anime films, so we can hook up with other clubs and some unit conveners.

Yeah, we're going to be pushing for the whole atmosphere thing as much as we can, hence getting other clubs and lecturers involved.

Hey, are there any Filmsoc events in O-week that you want to advertise in the Lachlan Review?

Re: Lachlan Review Online

Do you have to be a member to go to the Filmsoc events.

HOw many people usually attend.

Where is it held? (Lighthouse Theatre?) How many people can it occupy cause I keep imagining some small lecture room with the film being played on the main screen.

Re: Lachlan Review Online

Back in the good ol' days - which sound like they are returning...
Filmsoc screened films in Macquarie Theatre - the lecture theatre near the library.
It used filmreels back then. But the technology has grown old with the uni.

So, now its easier to use DVDs - but it's still on the big screen...

Re: Lachlan Review Online

Well there was once a creative leisure course on Photography run by SAM - but I don't think SAM runs such courses anymore... So good opportunity for someone to start a club like that...

I could put the week's best photo in the Lachlan Review.

You could run a Semester long photo comp...

be very cool...

if you want to affiliate with SAM you only need 15 students to start the club.

(my mix mash - should've been mish mash i think)
