So what course preferences does your university have? which are you a fan of? do you actually understand what they mean and what the difference is between the various systems?

eg USYD first year courses are like PHIL1001 or PHIL1011

At UTS the subject codes are five or six digits long, and I've figured them out a little. First number is Faculty or School (eg 6xxxx for Science, 3xxxx for Maths and IT) with some logical inconsistencies based on historical relations. Second digit indicates the particular department (68xxx = Physics, 65xxx = Chemistry) and the remaining three digits indicate (in variable combinations) the specific field and level of the subject.

At UWA the subject codes seem to function on the basis of six digits seperated into threes by a point or a slash. The first three indicate the faculty and school (eg I'm currently guessing 909 to be Medicine) and the last three designate the field and level of the particular subject, as well as the semester in which it takes place. Exempi gratia: Foundations of Clinical Practice 1 is 909.111 (semester 1), Foundations of Clinical Practice 2 is 909.112 (semester 2).

I personally prefer the numerical system, it seems neater and more logical than alpha codes (many more numbers available) but ONLY when logical consistency is maintained. If you allow historical links to interfere with the numerical logic of the codes then the system is complicated by ambiguities (such as the confusion between Maths and IT subjects at UTS, caused by the era in which the Faculty of IT was the School of Computer Science, in the Department of Mathematics).

Eeesh ... all those numbers get so confusing. lol. But i guess once you get used to them, its fine.

But at UWS we have the number of the subject then the full name, eg:
EH201A: Environment and Tourism Management.

I like seeing the whole name of the subject cause it gets very confusing, especially when similar subjects are done.

Thats only in some units. Most of my units have been somehting like 200085 which is Fundamentals of Market Research. Last year for my management unit it was like MGT

We also have 100 level 200 level and 300 level etc. Post Grad is like 700 level
Up thats true ... different letters and different numbers depending on what school the subject belongs to.

I have no idea the way they number them. I only mainly focus upon the level 100, 200 and 300. Saying that, I did integrated approaches to sustainability last year and it was 300349 while environment and tourism management is EH210A. But they are both in the school of environment and agriculture.

if your wondering about the usyd system..
i think it goes:

1001 meaning that there are only 2 first year subjects for that field, 1 being the first semester. so take ECON1001 and ECON1002. ECON1002 is the counter part of ECON1001.

there is also 1003 which means that the unit runs in both semesters, and usually has no other partner subject.. eg. ISYS1003

and of course there is PHIL1010, PHIL1011, PHIL1012 or soemthing... i think they name it take way because there are more than 2 subjects for that field.

my 2 cents....

anyways.. at mq, we have 100 (junior), 200 (intermediate) and 300 (senior) units, and of course the 800 or something level for post grad.

on another note, whats with all the questions in uni general? trying to rack up your post count?
