LAN connection problem (1 Viewer)

Alright guys, I was at a LAN right before and I had a slight problem connecting to other computers. I could join/make games, go on the net using their connection etc. but I couldn't leech off them. Whenever I clicked on 'View workgroup computers' in My Network Places, I got an error message:

I'm the administrator of this computer, btw.

Here is what I did to try to establish the connection:

1. Went to My Network Place.

2. Went to 'Setup a home or small office network'.

3. Followed the wizard setup.

The funny thing is, I tried this heaps of times, and sometimes I got an error message saying 'Error establishing a network' or something like that.

From my memory, this is exactly how I did it with my old rig, and it worked.

Any suggestions?

There could be countless reasons for this........

.......do they have sharing set on their computers? Do you have sharing installed on your computer? Were you on the same workgroup?

try manually setting up ICS

set server to 192.168.0.1

clients to 192.168.0.*
(* mean any number, just make sure it is different for each computer and not 0 or 1)
client DNS to 192.168.0.1
client gateway to 192.168.0.1

enable sharing in the connection you want on server.

should work, this is what i do to share. The auto setup wizard is kinda unreliable at times

EDIT: also set the workgroup to the same thing for all computers (ie. "MSHOME" or "WORKGROUP")

.......do they have sharing set on their computers? Do you have sharing installed on your computer? Were you on the same workgroup?

Sharing on their computers: I would say so, because the guy I was setting it up with usually has LANs all the time, and he has no problem.

Sharing on my computer: Enabled.

Same workgroup: Yes.

Lol.. erm that seems a bit too complicated for me. I can assure you that the workgroup name was the same though.

Do the ICS windows troubleshooter, it has instructions on how to manually set up

What i did for my lan is kinda bad way of doing it but at least it always works.

all you do is create additional users on your computer. So say the computer u want to leech of has username 'mic' and password 'ric', all you do is just create an additional user on ur computer with this name and password. and when u want to grab some files from that computer, u just go 'my network places' or whatever, so that u see this other computer and click on it and log in with this 'mic' and 'ric' thing.
You also have to add your username and password of ur comuter to the one u wanna leach of so they can acess you..and when enabling sharing give all the computers full access.

Naturally this is a very bad way of doing it but i only have 3 computers connected here so i have 3 users on each one and can acess each one from whatever computer. If ur LAN uses heaps of computers this way is no good.

Right dont worry about it. I had all the firewalls and anti-virus protection programs UNinstalled on my computer and I can still not access any MSHOME networks. Use DC++ its much better program for sharing files, and you should be able to access that. I have onboard GIGABIT LAN on my ASUS P4P800 and I mean its a 6 month old motherboard so it should work moreso than others. Your using XP right?

Download DC++ (Direct Connect) from somewhere I am almost 100% sure its free its "like teh bestest progarrrm evvaaa".

But I still havent fixed the problem and I am being as modest as I can when I say I have fixed all the problems on my computer except this one. Out of site, out of mind.
