can anyone tell me whether it is a 'norm' for laptops to be used during lectures? or do most people just use a pad and pen? particularly in arts and law? thanks

I do Art/Law and no one uses laptops. Usually the lecturers speak to fast and sometimes do diagrams which take to long to do on computer. What I usually do is write my notes in class on pen and paper then write then up on my laptop back at college.

Also, the tables things you have on your chair aren't reallt big enough for a laptop.

also depending on what desk you use, im not sure in arts but in education, some arent all that stable andd can fall over on and youd drop your laptop which i dare say probably wouldnt be all that healthy for it

I agree with thornydevil. When I did Arts/Law, I think I only saw a person using a laptop once (and they didn't stick with it long).

Particularly in law subjects, lectures can go really quickly and there's just not enough time to type everything up. Pen & paper worked well for me. Another good method is to use a tape recorder and type up notes from the lecture back at college. Then again, sometimes the lecturers will hand out notes from the lecture which will save you a whole heap of time :) .

Just adding to lawgrad1's comment on tape recorders, the Law Faculty are now beginning to tape all lectures and they get put on the WebCT for later use by students, ie. any time you want t listen to them. You can even save the lectures to your computer. You can also get the power point displays that they use to compliment the recordings.

Yikes! Wouldn't have minded those on WebCT when I was at uni : ) When I was there, only external students would get taped lectures.

The powerpoint displays are also very useful summaries of the lectures. They'll come in very handy during exam time.
