Laser printer (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of getting a black and white laser printer because my mum and I are constantly printing out notes/assignments/reports, however I'm not really sure if it's going to be economical. Currently I have a Lexmark inkjet, the quality's not that good and the ink's always running out...
How much will I be expecting to spend on a laser printer? One that's not too fancy and does the job?

Printers that scan/fax/print, all in one, are like $179, so for a simple printer, not very much! I'd say about $100.

i got mine a few years ago for $200-250.

Look for the PANASONIC model "KX P1700" you don't really find them in shops but you'll find corner computer shops will order them for you.

They used to be worth around $400 about a year ago now they're down to about $250 and they're really value for money.

The ink catridges are only $95 each and last for about 2 yrs and the Panasonic appliances are really reliable.
So after much research I got that model.

if you use refills with inkjet the TCO works out to be similar to laser with the added benefit of being able to print photos.

but the main advantage of laser is the waterproof toner.

HOWEVER, if you buy a cheap laser be prepared to pay more for printing since it will be less economical with toner.

I'd check out officeworks' sales. The Back to Work sale will mean great savings. We are selling the Canon 1120 for under $200, its a bargain. Go Laser - if you are doing black and white, always go with it. Cheaper to run, more efficient and easier to read where there is text. Paper is also much cheaper than Ink jet paper.

As for Lexmark, my philosophy: if you run out of ink, buy a new printer (cheaper).

Also with officeworks, if you find it cheaper, we'll beat it!

Ahh I wouldn't recommend them. Go with something that's trusted, Hewlett Packard, Canon, Brother.

Sorry that's incorrect. Leaser is much much more cheaper to run than inkjet. A toner can last you 3000 to 4000 prints and if it runs out, give a good shake and you get even more prints. Toners are in the $100 mark and if you go to Officeworks we have generic cartridges, that will make you save.

Also, don't use refills. They can stuff up the ink heads and many manufacturers will not repair a broken printer from the refill cartridges.

refills are completely safe if you buy quality ones.

About the quality refills, you are right. But a note to all: make sure they have 100% guarantee or at least a certification from the manufacturer.

I've got the Canon LBP3200, and it's great.

May I complement you on your choice - they are great machines.

I have three printers, one is HP MFC LaserJet, beaut machine and the other is the C900 Epson AcuLaser - can't beat the Colour Laser (cartridges cost around $1000 to replace but I haven't changed them at all yet).

Very much so. Remember if you go with unkown brands or brands that make too many printers - you are going to end up not finding your cartridge and you will be stuck going to a retailer who will charge you heaps.

got my hl-1430 from the good guys too(staff discount tho ). had no problems with it at all except that it doesnt print colour...which is ok since its a b/w printer

i trust hp, my old hp printer was awesome.
the one thing i hate about Lexmark is its printer utility program. isn't it like a spyware?!
