you know sometimes in a good film there will be a wonderful moment where every aspect of the film works together and you are lost in the magic of it all...?

well, for me, "vivre sa vie" was one long magical moment.
especially the joan of arc part and the jukebox dancing.

...and i'd fight mike tyson bare-knuckled to be a heart donor for anna karina.

'shakespeare in love'

i didnt realise it was written by tom stoppard, but that makes sense.
it's funny, i dont like any of the actors in it by themselves (bar judi dench) but as a whole movie it's spectacular. the whole is much much greater than the sum of its parts.

and i think it's way better than 'elizabeth', no matter what anyone says.

today i saw 'happy together' by wong kar-wai and now i feel like dying...

i feel the EXACT same way i felt after watching 'midnight cowboy', but not as intensely.

i don't why am i so badly affected by films like these. i never cry in movies, except if the characters are really poor and dirty and have to resort to prostitution to make a living, especially gay prostitution...

they're both brilliant movies. But i like elizabeth more. Entertainment wise, Shakespeare in love wins because it is more comedic, however, plot-wise i love elizabeth...and the way it's filmed, it's beautiful to watch.

The last film i watched: Da vinci code. Didnt hate it, not impressed by it either.

Do The Right Thing (1989) - i finally saw this and it was different to what i expected - much better. i thought early spike lee was angry, but it's more meditated than i'd thought. funny watching so many actors in early roles too. restrained from simplistic resolution, contrary to its title terrific movie. also surprising to see the 'best bit' of 25th hour is kind-of re-used from this movie.

La Strada (1954) - also surprised by this. it's a lot more simple than the other fellini movies i've seen so far (la dolce vita, 8 1/2), but not a bad thing. the two main performances are amazing. it lives up to its hype, like other fellini movies i find myself thinking about scenes days later. the episodic structure really works (also in la dolce vita).

Sword of Vengeance (1st Lone Wolf and Club) (1972) - i've seen some of the later movies in the series on sbs. short but sweet.

no it's not, it's shitty, badly concealed radical propaganda that doesnt have any proper character development, uses utterly shameful cheap laugh ploys and demeans every reputable professional that was involved.

(although willem dafoe is good in anything, and hugh grant just gets me where i live.)

but really really really, don't waste your money.

Candy - some superb acting in this fine little drug drama out of australia. Not perfect, but very good, and quite moving. Good to see something local that i've come away with a lot of respect for.
