Hey! I'm currently a Year 12 student and I'm interested in Macquaire University's Law/Accounting double degree. I read that it's cut-off point is around 95.85%. I'm predicting/hoping that I'll get a UAI somewhere in the vicinity of 96% or above :) Are there anyone doing this courses right now? If so, can you please tell me what is the minimum UAI required to GUARENTEE entry into the course? Let's say that I got a UAI of 96.00% on the dot, will I be assured of entry? Is the course good? What are the job prospects for Macquaire law graduates? I'm planning to work in places like Ernst and Young, as an accountant/lawyer (???). Are there such a thing? Which law school is better, Macquaire's or ANU? This is because both have about the same cut-offs for law, and I think I can only manage a UAI of that high :) Help would be greatly appreciated!!!

1. A UAI isn't a percentage score.
2. We cannot guarentee that if you get a UAI of X that you'll get into Law/Accounting without lying. Having said that, if you get 97.00 on the dot, you'll get in. 96.00 on the dot would be risky.
3. GoodToGo does Law, so he should be able to answer the more Law specific questions.

ANU probably has a better LAW degree. The cutoff's are influenced by location, since ANU is regional, obviously the cut-offs wont be that high.

I dont think theres such a thing as an accountant/lawyer. Ernst and Young do like accouting graduates with solid legal knowledge though, so ive been told. My dream job is with Ernst and Young too, such a cool company! I hope one day ill be working in their New York building, that would kick so much ass.

ANU law is as good as UNSW law

In other words, it dominates macq

I do commerce (fin)/law at macq (so i'm not being biased towards ANU, it is def better, I just didn't want to leave home and my mates to go there)

If ANU's law is as good as UNSW and USYD, why is it's cut-off so much lower? It's only 95%, compared to the other two, who are about 99.7%. Is it just because of it's location? I'm not planning to be a barrister, but instead more of a solicitor. You know, the ones who don't go to court. I'm more interested in the corporate part of it, like becoming a tax lawyer, immigration lawyer, conveyancing, etc.

the published cutoff is the lowest UAI they allowed into the course that particular year. so if the cutoff last year was 95.85, then the person thats now doing it with the lowest UAI must have scored 95.85. that being said, the cutoffs are likely to change from year to year. this year it may go up or go down or stay the same, just because last years cutoff was 95.85 and you get say 96 this year, theres no guarenteeing you will get in, unless the cutoff stays the same or goes down.

ANU has the rep as a top law school but in terms of getting into the Top 6 firms IN Sydney you can't beat the UNSW and USYD. As for getting into the Big 4 accounting firms, UNSW is best and then USYD/UTS/Mac - they seem to be level these days.

But as for Macq v ANU: Its Canberra...eek. If you can handle 5 years there, more power to you. Go for it.

Macquarie is building its rep as a good lawchool through success in intervarsity comps. And in my 3 years of law I've seen some pretty major changes (solid internal comps with large number of competitiors, 4 law journals, 2 clinical units, etc).

canberra sucks if you're used to sydney. i lived there for a year in 1999 and ended up hating it, my sister lived there for a year in 2001 and ended up hating it as well. its like a small town, and theres little to no nightlife which even if you're old(er) can be depressing overall.

how long is a law/accounting degree? 7 years?

Oversupply of anything is always bad, besides law people, this includes actuaries. =p
