I think Harvard would only be willing to exchange with ANU or Sydney, and even then it would be very difficult to get into (in terms of your education too it would be a year wasted cos what they learn is pretty much irrelevant in Australia).

Ms 12 is right, to an extent.

Foriegn policy these days greatly affects our legal system. While in theory law represents society's morals and values, I believe you will find it is a product of policial point-scoring and acedemic debate. Hence, we will find American influence all through our legal system.

This being said, doing law at Harvard (for any number of years) will be of IMMENSE benefit for one pursuring a career in law, even in Australia. In doing this year of study it both looks good on your resume, and at the same time allows for transfer prospects. Ever wanted to work, travel and get paid all at once? This would be one such method.

You would have overseas contacts, you could deal with overseas law firms, you could even move to America and perhaps find work over there (yes, system is different, perhaps more training, but -1 year wouldnt be bad at all).

Furthermore, the experience would be excellent. It is not often you can go overseas, have a blast and get an education at perhaps the most reputable law school in the world.

For these reasons, while i agree with Ms 12, I have to say that going over to Harvard would be an exceptional idea. If it is possible.

Im going to try and go to Yale for a semester in either 2nd or 3rd year....much nicer place and waaaay better law school! But yeah only a semester cos like I said itd be wasted time academically foy your law degree at home. But the experience would be AWESOME.

But having said that, theres nothing stopping you going to Harvard, just blitz your first few subjects at uni (but like I said, it will be difficult if this uni isn't ANU or USyd) and bug em till they say yes!

Various unis offer law subjects to be taken at other unis in this world. Harvard, Washington, Honk Kong, Germany.

However if you wanted to do a law degree at Harvard, you may not meet the requirements to practice law within Australia.

Whist only some unis can offer students places in unis overseas, almost all will offer international mooting competititons.

if u were specialising in international criminal law then going to any law school overseas would be both benefical and enriching experience!
other then that, it wont really help u (except that it sounds good and looks good next to ur name)

The only transfer I know of to get into an overseas law school *uni) would be by the Rhodes scholarship

If you do a degree from scratch in a foreign law school, you need to be inducted with a course in Australia that clarifies our laws. This can be done at UTS for example with the Graduate Diploma in Australian Law. Furthermore if you chose an English Law School, the College of Law in Sydney can induct you as an Australian Lawyer. They have a centre in England.

Its pretty much impossible to get into. Therefore having 'Harvard' next to your name is verrrrrry good ;)

And Asq, stop plugging UNSW law, they wouldn't accept me even if I had applied, your spiel is lost on me! But if I'd had the choice, I would gone to Sydney.......I just really didn't like the feel of the UNSW campus or the lifestyle there.....

Hehe it wasn't an attack I forgot my smilies for emotion. I don't know where I was (it was down the bottom if thats what you're referring to) but yeah I didn't like it. Then again Ive never been to Sydney so I might have hated that just as much. But it don't matter cos neither were ever going to accept me!!

Isn't it "Lex Legum Magister"
