Law/Comm MAQ vs UTS (1 Viewer)

Hello all!

I am currently studying year 12 in the Sydney region and next year would like to study a double degree of commerce law. My first preference is Syd uni, although with the high atar requirement my more realistic options are Macquarie and UTS.

I am currently having trouble differentiating the two unis so I am asking for any advice from current uni students doing either course on their opinions.

While I am not a student at either MQ or UTS, I will provide some thoughts which you may find useful. At the same time, my post will bump your thread, so that hopefully people studying at these universities can provide more direct advice.

In terms of MQ's Bachelor of Commerce and UTS's Bachelor of Business, you essentially cannot go wrong with either degree. Both universities offer good programs with a wide array of specialisations. With that being said, MQ offers more majors than UTS, meaning that, depending on the field that you wish to study, there is a slightly higher chance that MQ offers your chosen field of study compared to UTS.

I believe that the Bachelor of Laws is where a more significant distinction can be made between the two universities. This is where UTS would probably have an advantage over MQ given that its current position as a university is more favourable. This is coupled with the notion that employers in the legal industry consider the university that a graduate attended. Based on this, UTS's Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws is likely the better option overall. Of course, even if you do end up choosing UTS, your academic performance (especially in the Bachelor of Laws) remains important, and unfavourable results at UTS would be inferior to favourable results at MQ.

Since you mentioned that USyd is your first preference but made no mention of UNSW, I was curious to know whether UNSW is also one of your preferences. Favourable performance in the LAT as well as a reasonably high ATAR (which would not have to be as high as that needed to receive an offer from USyd) should give you a good chance of receiving an offer.

The LAT is not like the UCAT in that sense. In my opinion at least, you don’t need to study for the LAT given the nature of the exam. I personally didn’t (or not that much) and scored well in the exam last year. I would also argue it is difficult to study for it. The LAT is about testing your analysis skills and your ability to pick out arguments within a text. That is essentially what the LAT is and you shouldn’t not do it just because ‘you don’t want to study it along with your HSC’. I hope that made sense.

Macquarie has a new law building so that may be something that could attribute to your decision, that’s about all I know for that uni though. I do know someone that goes to Macquarie for law though.

UTS law is very practical so lots of group work etc, this would be valuable in practice when you begin your lawyer career.The law building for uts is nice as well.

I would say finance at both unis is relatively similar.

The information about LAT was much appreciated. Could I ask what you did to prepare for the LAT, if anything?

I have heard really good things about the law building at Macquarie, however my main concern is the level of "prestige" between unis as seen per employers.

In actuality, UNSW Law school is rated higher than USYD Law school in the 2023 QS World University Rankings (20th Vs 38th for under category LAW). Although USYD is very prestigious and you require a high ATAR to get in, UNSW seems to provide the better course with a more realistic ATAR entry for most.

Before you enter your course, make sure you check where it ranks in its degree amongst other university schools rather than holistically. A good university in general may not be that great faculty wise for a specific course
