I'm doing my HSC next year so I've started Yr 12 and am still trying to come up with a topic for my major work. I've got a few ideas but I'd really like to do my essay on Led Zepelin. Something which would incorporate their media silence, acts of debouchery, led zeppelin 4 cover etc. I'm thinking something along the lines of Were they doing all this stuff just to gain attention, some kind of image or were they genuinely trying to protect their music?

I'm not quite sure and I was wondering if this type of topic would be feasable. I'm pretty flexible and if anyone has suggestions I'm happy to look into some other similar topics?

Thanks alot.

Good luck everyone!

Led Zeppelin's fine. Although I'd talk to the class teacher before starting. Have a look a iconography perhaps?

i.e.
Check the historical debate/ argument surrounding the construction of his image throughout history, review the differences in opinion according to that academics/specialist p.o.v their context and weave that into your thesis.

Love the Immigrant Song btw.

surrounding the construction of his image
What do you mean by the construction of "his" image?
The iconography could be good to look at.

Btw, I agree, the Immigrant Song rocks!

i.e. How other people view him, the many values he represents. For example; Queen Elizabeth's representation is of the virgin queen, who excelled in politics, was eloquent and
When you think of image construction, there are:
- purpose of the composer [english adv. bs I know]
- context of composer, and how this impacted on the nature of his/her writing. I'm not too clear on Led as the rockstar but say he was a filthy womaniser [e.g. OK!] another historian would rebut with an opposing argument emphasising other aspects [for e.g. his political skill and...give evidence of his respect for women in his music/lyrics] providing a devils advocate style and thus establishing his/her firm historical debate.

Also what other factors contributed to his image as a filthy womaniser, and what historical debates [aka conflicting reports] are there to rebut that?

Haha. Evidently. Led Zeppelin was a rock band. 4 members. That's why I was confused by him.

Anyway you make a good point as to the perceptions. I think you might have given me a feasible idea, I'll have to look into it though.

Thanks for the help.

Not so sure about the satan worshipper part, but Page has a well known interest in the occult, which you may want to look into...

:D Since I've Been Loving You is the one doing it for me lately.

Btw, the song from LZ III is just "Immigrant Song", there is no "the" before the title. :)

I agree. LZ III was panned when it came out, but over time it's definitely become more recognised as a fine album. The acoustic work on the album is amazing -- That's the Way and Tangerine are two of the band's finest acoustic songs.

Tangerine was my favourite of the album. Immigrant Song is amazing though. In Through The Out Door is kind of cool to. Wasn't Jmmy Page so much so it's kinda different. The third track is really funky, forget the name.
