The police are nearly incapable of protecting us, and its morally wrong for them to deny us the right to protect ourselves.

We shouldnt have rocket launchers etc...................but basic guns should be available to the public atleast for the protection of ur own home.

Your allowed to get a gun to killl innocent little animals...but u cant get a gun for protection purposes.................What a load of shit.

Also bulllet prooof and nife proof vests should be available to the public. -- are nife prooof vests illlegal? why does the government outlaw bullet prooof vests? Fucking government.
The reason the govt has outlawed bulletproof vests and knifeproof vest (if their is such a thing) as i see it, is because if a criminal has a vest on its harder for the cops to take them down, especially when not all cops have vests. As for personal protection as a valid reason for gun ownership, it will never be brought in, it is better to promote gun ownership within the current laws, as being a spokesperson for "guns for personal protection" is likely to work against the cause of gun ownership

So just for the protection of the police.....we can not have bullet prooof vests? the number of police who have beeen shot..........is very remote anyways and they have guns for self protection .......

We the public who are meant to be protected by the police .......................are deprived of bullet proooof clothing..and made more vulnerable.........cos the police are more concerned about protecting themselves.

We have no guns..............no protecting clothing...........its up to the police to protect us alll..................................and they dont even do it properly.........cos they are toooo bz...................chasing ......................car theifs and other petty crims...........

I dont care..............if gun crime would increase......im totally against.........the principal of stopping citizens protecting themselves by preventing gun ownership. its immmoral.

Look, i get where ur coming from, i do but that doesnt change the fact the majority will never allow this to happen, so you just have to be realistic. If the govt made these vest legal for everyone, as ive already stated then the crims would be the first ones buying them, cause i dont see anyway they could regulate who has a vest and who doesnt, except a criminal background check, is that what u think should happen

This is why, the current guns laws are good, and this is evidence of them working

Are we getting angry?

I reckon that we shouldn't make guns legalised, solely based on the fact that accidents happen, and there are some bogan aussies that just wanna blow stuff up.

I have nothing against blowing stuff up, except in the case where the "stuff" is humans. :p

We have such a high rate of depression in people today, access to guns may make more suicides, and people who are seriously angry with the world, and people are gonna wanna take as many people down with them as possible.

Disturbing but true.

We have so many other ways of protecting ourselves anyway, like limbs, pepper spray (do we have that?), and knives :D

I think things are ok now.

SAY NO TO GUNSIES!!!!!!

So pepper spray, knives etc against snakes, rabid cattle and wild dogs. Truly you've never lived on a farm. Try putting an animal out of it's misery with a knife. Especially a cow or somwething similiar.
And pepper spray doesn't work against everyone. And guns are always going to be available illegally even if they have to be smuggled in. And because of people like you we have to protect our family with knives and pepper spray against automatic pistols.

My whole thing isnt just about whats easiest etc.....................mine is about morals........

Its not even about whats the most practical or effective.

I think its every human beings right to protect urself and ur family.

The police dont protect everyone........

Its just from a moral point of view..that i believe we should have less restrictions and more means to protect ourselves. Im not saying that would increase or decrease voilent crimes............its just the principal..........that innocent ppple should have the right to protect themselves from scum bags.

Tatoodguy didn't say that. he might be on about that, but I'm not. I agree with what he about said less restrictions. Check out the restrictions on various types of rifles. It's long step from a semi automatic rifle to a Glock. At least that's what I'm on about.

And allowing people guns to protect their homes doesn't give them the right to carry them around town.

thats right..........im not advocating everyone carrying a gun.....

but i do think you should be allowed to have a gun in ur house for protection.

you say that if more people had guns ......civilians would have hand guns and the crims would have shot guns or semi automatic rifles and that would endanger ppple even more?

i would rather have a hand gun....................verse a shot gun......

than a piece of woood or a kitchen nife..............against any form of gun.

At the moment................crims still have guns and anything around ur home is pretty much defenselesss against their firepower.

Its not fair for people to be inprisoned for having guns for self protection..........its a basic human right to protect yourself.

what i dont get is, coudnt u just try and make a bulletproof vest? dont the crims have vests anyways? like in that movie, 1000 miles to graceland or something where the crims rob a casino dressed as elvis... nothing wrong with getting bulletproof clothing
and with guns, why cant we have em? worst case scenario is they help keep the popu.lation down...just like ciggarettes, lets make ciggarettes illegal...oh wait, its a smokers choice to smoke.. so why isnt the choice of an average working joe to have the means to protect themselves?

dont give me that fucked up bullshit of an arguement that if every1 had guns the cops would have a harder time, the criminals that would use a gun on the cops already have them, and besides from what i know the police dept are using ancient model weopons[ applies to NSW only SA and VIC police dept have upgraded to newer model weopons], if guns are so important to THEIR defence, why dont they have an upgraded, more effective weopon? even if we were only allowed glocks?

i dont give a a shit about the law anyways and how u cant kill or hurt or shoot or stab some1 breaking into ure house, right now as it is if some1 broke in my house, i would fucken em over in the head with a baseball bat, ask questions later.. i would prefer to go to prison being safe knowing my family was defended from a possible threat, then being passive in a home invasion and haveing them kill my family and end up being sorry. when it comes to my family, no precaution is 2 great, better a safe family than a sorry me

with a gun, even low caliber weopon, easyer to defend family and self.

Do u have any idea about guns, u say that a glock is low calibre, which it isnt, and glocks are made out of hardened plastic, with only very few metal pieces, that can be detected by metal detectors. I also believe that NSW cops are equiped with glocks

hmmmm,
Korn and BennyGuy, your post replies are too long to read. What are you newspaper columnists?
Get to the point in point from preferably. Man, I have never written anything that long since HSC english exams, lol.

Look at Cabramatta and Bankstownish western suburbs. There's so much news about random shootings, drivebys in the past 10 years or so. All those drug gangs and shit, I dont think they go join their little animal hunting club to own a gun. they prolly blackmarket the shit - to go and kill people and still their goods.

Thats just screwed. they should ban all guns, even sporting ones - just incase there are corrupted sportspeople who sell their stuff on blackmarket. All imported stuff should be checked with the POST. All people who get a gun illegally should be shot.

Sorry I don't think I clarified myself properly. I didn't mean do not allow guns to be used full stop, but do not make them legal for everyday people. For rural aussies, guns are a must-have. I was just saying that you really need to be tested before getting guns, rather than just letting any old joe gain a gun.

And i would like to formally apologise for my immaturity in that post, a while back, I blame that on my blood-sugar levels - they were though the roof. I solemly swear i shall never post high again. :(

(btw Korn, i did actually read them all, i was just putting in my thoughts. Please don't hate me :(, i'm sorry i'm a retard)

Look at some of these bull shit laws.

(a) firing a firearm at a dwelling-house or other building with reckless disregard for the safety of any person (the maximum penalty being imprisonment for 14 years),

(b) stealing a firearm (14 years imprisonment),

(c) possession by an unauthorised person of an unregistered firearm in a public place (10 years imprisonment) as well as a separate offence (14 years imprisonment) in aggravated circumstances (namely, if the offence involves more than one unregistered firearm, an unregistered prohibited firearm or an unregistered pistol)

The newly created offences under the Firearms Act 1996 are:

(a) selling a firearm part to an unauthorised person (5 years imprisonment) as well as a separate offence (10 years imprisonment) of selling a firearm part that relates to any kind of prohibited firearm or pistol,

(b) selling firearm parts illegally on an ongoing basis (20 years imprisonment),

(c) using a false document (such as a document that purports to be a firearm licence or permit) in order to obtain a firearm (10 years imprisonment).

These laws are fucking bull shit.

stealing a gun 14 years.....................what a fucking joke.................

having a gun in public 10 years

shoooting a house............14 years

These laws are fucking bull shit.................if no one gets hurt.........u should not be sent to prison.........................espe8ically for just having or stealing a gun...........our government is imprisoning people over bull shit.

Invading a country based on fabricated information isnt a crime according to our government. Lying to the public and other forms of government abuse..........are usuualy solved through a warning.

Why arnt politicians sent to jail -------------- it shouldnt be that you might not get re-elected..for your misleading and abusing your power............if you want to lead the country and you fuck up.............u should be put in jail.

Once again all the citizens of this country are subject to rediculous laws while everyone in our government and police force are let offf.

Isnt allowing our fucking military to die just so we can get better trade deals with the united states ----------------isnt that a crime?

In my opinion that should falll under the category of treason..................thats betraying our country.

What can I say? You might want to live in a society where people can drive by and shoot up your house without getting punished, but I don't. Nor does most of our society, I'd say...

As a matter of interest, if I take a gun and try to murder you, but miss and hit the wall next to you, should I be sent to prison or not?

Politicians are subject to the same laws as any other citizen, with very few exceptions. (Exemption from a suit of defamation for words spoken in Parliament is an exception, for example.) If a politician is caught drink driving, then they will be charged with the same offence as any other citizen. If a politician takes a gun and holds up a service station, then they'll probably be charged with armed robbery, convicted and sent to jail.

We hold our politicians to higher standards because of the responsibilitiexs involved with the job they are elected to do. Yes, if they're criminally negligent, then they should be charged appropriately. We don't, however, send people to jail for merely being incompetent at their jobs -- we sack them. And we should do the same with our elected representatives.

Decent examples would be nice about....now.

Australia went to war because our government decided it was best for the country. Now, that decision may well have been made for political reasons, and a majority of the people in this country may or may not agree with it. What you're suggesting, though, is that the government committed a crime under Australian law, and I challenge you to prove that. (International conventions are another thing, of course -- there may well be a case against Australia there.)

Oh, if you believe it's treason, feel free to write a letter to your MP suggesting an appropriate law. I'd be interested in the response you get (if any).

Rarely do I feel the need to actually say this (although I often think it), but...think before you speak.

ummmmmmmmmmm

if you try and kill me -------thats like attempted murder or something....

when i was talking about the bull shit laws -- i was more specificaly saying......stealing a gun.....possessing a gun.......cos neither of those............pose a direct risk to anyones safety.

if you point a gun at someone ----------- i think that should be a charge......but i dont necesarily think u should be put in jail over it.....depending on the circumstances.

if you shoot at someones house......but u dont hurt anyone..........you can probably put someohne in jail for it.......................but 14 years is redicious.

I was just pointing out...how rediculous the penalties were.......you can still charge people over these things..........and maybe inprison people........but under no circumstances should anyone be inprisoned more than a year......for simply having a gun...................... and 95% of the time they shouldnt even go to jail

there are amples examples of the police not being punished for things they do wrong...........such as illeegal searches......using unnesesary force..........they are yusually paid while under investigating for there fuck ups.......etc etc.........

there are double standards.

with the iraq thing ---------------and other things with politicains............i agree they have to follow our laws like the rest of us....

but they have extra responsibilities..........that should also mean we have additional laws specificaly designed to monitor their activities.

they make the laws in our country......................and protect them selves and the police........

So when you ask me to find a law....................that they broke....in relation to iraq............i cant find one..............cos they didnt make one.........cos they write the laws.......to protect themselves.

But its so obvious that its absolute bull shit.

Well, our society has agreed that these acts are wrong, and as a society, we want these acts to be illegal. As part of those laws, we usually specify a maximum penalty for it. That's to stop judges from prescribing draconian sentences (life imprisonment for stealing a gun, to use your example).

In addition, our laws sometimes prescribe *minimum* sentences as well. This is to stop judges giving sentences which are far too lenient. Not many crimes have a minimum sentence attached to them; in fact, I don't think I can quote a specific one from memory.

The point is, the figures you quoted are maximum sentences. As you said, an appropriate sentence often depends on the circumstances of a crime. In most cases, judges do not hand down the maximum sentence possible, but choose a sentence which they think is appropriate and in line with community expectations.

tattoodguy said:

So are you suggesting that we should presume their guilt until they're proven innocent and deny them their pay?

We do. For example, the Hansard is published and contains a record of everything said in Parliament. Documents are generally available under the Freedom of Information Act. If you want to have a look, check here: http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/foia1982222/

Actually, I suspect you can't find one because any such law would be unreasonable. After all, the point of having elected representatives is that we place our trust in them to make certain decisions and judgements. In a true, absolute democracy, the entire population would vote on every decision taken. That was possible in ancient Greek society, for example, where the voting population consisted only of the patricians -- a much smaller number than the 20 million people we have in Australia.

Instead, we entrust our representatives with the responsibility to take in the information that they gather (through, for example, ASIO) and to make judgements based on that information. In this case, they evidently decided that it was the right thing to do. If we start demanding overly restrictive laws, we may well end up with a government that cannot react appropriately to different situations.
