I was wondering if people think the threat of terrorism has been exaggerated or misunderstood.
I mean we've only had a handful of attacks and the WTC was a fluke (they didn't expect the building to collapse).
I reckon if someone gave me and the rest of my yr 12 hundreds of millions of dollars and orders to cause as much damage as possible,I could fuck up this country.
Either the terrorists are really stupid and lazy, they're concentrating on their home territory or there really aren't that many of them.

Isn't that the point of terrorism though? From Princeton's WordNet (my emphasis):

terrorism

n : the calculated use of violence (or threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear.

So terrorism is about making people look at events like the WTC attack, and causing general fear, alarm and panic. How would terrorism work if there was no media to carry the news? If we in Australia had never heard about the WTC attack, would we be as alarmed? (Or perhaps just alert, I suppose. )

I don't think we can fault the media for reporting the news. What we *can* say (and this comes back to the original question) is that the media tends to slightly exaggerate the danger. Unfortunately, that fits right in with the sensationalist approach taken by most of the news outlets.

In contrast, the government probably tends to downplay the risks slightly. I guess they do this both for political reasons and to balance out, to some extent, the alarmist views that often appear in the media.

So yes, it's quite possible that the threat of terrorism has been mis-stated. What a wonderful world. *sigh*

Do you even know the real meaning of the word terrorism, ie to evoke feelings of terror to further one's goals. Israel isn't using terror as its primary purpose in quelling the Palestinians, they are using outright force. The Palestinians are using terror.

Oh sorry, now thta you express it that way i guess i was wrong. The Israelis are being terrorised because their opponents are terrorists.

You Soha let your ethnicity guide your posts, I can look beyond that and objectively look at the facts. I actually support the Palestinians in their campaign and I think the whole land should be theirs.

That however doesn't change the fact that the Israelis are being terrorised while Israel is using the brute force of their army to oppress the Palestinians.
