odd...China, as a communist country, theoretically, shouldn't be big on property rights. To lock someone up for gigantic infringement of copyright suggests otherwise.

On one line in a news article you don't get much of an idea of the details of the case... but in general I don't think it's fair - If only because his only victims (if his movies were of decent quality) are rich movie studio's.

i think a big fine would be more a appropriate coupled with some jail time

china doesn't place the same value on a human as the west does. It's not really much for them to throw someone in gaol to act as an example
