Are you a past HSC student with strengths in Maths, Business Studies, Chemistry or Physics?
Do you want to be play an important role in this year's BoS Trials which are referenced by many students, teachers and tutors across the state? :bosman:

Every year we host the BoS trial exam events in early October (see the 2022 and 2023 threads). This is usually an in-person event where we invite students to practice an unseen trial paper (written by us) under simulated exam conditions. Last year, we ran the BoS trials for Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, Business Studies and Physics.

Behind the scenes there are multiple people who volunteer time out of their busy lives to write the trial exam content, run the event and mark student responses. These people are crucial in helping make the event a success to the benefit of the HSC student community every year. Unlike many other sites that may have commercial/monetary interests, the BoS trials are run by a team of volunteers that are all about helping the student community.

Once again this year, we need some help 🙏. We are looking for people to fill the following volunteering roles in the BoS Trials team. Details are below.
________________________________________________________________

1. Markers (and authors) for the Maths BoS Trials
Our infamous Maths BoS Trials have been going on for 10+ years and in recent years we have had a shortage of markers. This is because there is often a short time between the event and the actual HSC Maths exams which makes the marking and solution writing process quite intensive and is constrained by the number of people who are available to help. This is not something that the exam authors can do themselves.

We are therefore looking for markers who will:
  • Read and understand the student responses provided (usually around 40ish students for each subject)
  • Assess and determine the marks awarded in line with our provided solutions and guidance
Whilst we are mainly looking for markers, we would also welcome any markers who also want to help contribute questions for the trial paper during its development phase!

Ideally, we would like people with the following:
  • achieved a comfortable band E4 in HSC Mathematics Extension 2
  • tutored students in HSC Maths
  • studied/studying Maths (or related) at university
  • must be physically available in first two weeks of October to collect and mark student responses
How to apply:
If this sounds like you, please send me a PM here outlining your expression of interest, including academic background/experience and availability before 30 June 2024.

2. Markers (and authors) for the Business Studies BoS Trials
We ran the Business Studies BoS trials for the first time in 2023 with great success! We hope to continue this in 2024, but this time we need markers to help out given the limited availability of our exam author to do this task.

We are looking for markers who will:
  • Read and understand the student responses provided (usually around 20ish students)
  • Assess and determine the marks awarded in line with our provided marking guidelines
Whilst we are mainly looking for markers, we also welcome any markers who also want to help contribute questions for the trial paper during its development phase!

Ideally, we would like people with the following:
  • achieved a comfortable band 6 in HSC Business Studies
  • tutored students in HSC Business Studies
  • studied/studying Business/Commerce (or related) at university
  • must be physically available in first three weeks of October to collect and mark student responses
How to apply:
If this sounds like you, please send me a PM here outlining your expression of interest, including academic background/experience and availability before 30 June 2024.

3. Authors AND markers for the Chemistry and Physics BoS trials
Last year we were unable to hold the Chemistry BoS trials, but we held the first ever Physics BoS trials in 2023. We would like to hold them this year, but we are under-resourced for both these subjects.

We are looking for trial exam authors AND markers who will:
  • Come up with questions and develop this year's trial paper (with our guidance on how to design the questions, but the ideas are all yours!)
  • Write up the solutions and marking guidelines to their questions
  • Mark student responses to the questions (usually around 30ish students) with support from us where feasible
Ideally, we would like someone with one or more of the following attributes in academic background and experience:
  • achieved a comfortable band 6 in HSC Chemistry or HSC Physics
  • tutored students in HSC Chemistry or HSC Physics (ideally for multiple years)
  • studied/studying Chemistry or Physics (or related) at university
  • must be available throughout ALL of late July to late October to develop the paper and physically collect/mark the student responses (i.e. cannot just be writing and not marking)
If you are able to fulfil this role, then your own questions will officially form part of the BoS trial papers resource, which not only helps future HSC students, but also has the visibility to be seen and referenced by students, teachers and tutors across NSW!

How to apply:
If this sounds like you, please send me a PM here outlining your expression of interest, including academic background/experience and availability before 30 June 2024.

PS: Note that we are looking for multiple people across both Chemistry and Physics. If we are unable to find enough suitable people by then, the Chemistry and Physics BoS trial exams will NOT go ahead this year...

In summary, if you are suitably qualified and want to contribute substantially to helping our HSC student community with a short-term project then you are highly encouraged to apply. Look forward to hearing from you. :)

Please also forward this to anyone you know who could be a suitable candidate and may be interested in helping out as well...

Do you guys do any BOS HSC English trials?
Unfortunately not, but that’s because we don’t have any people who are prepared to write and mark a trial paper. If there are people who specialise in this subject and are willing to do this then we can provide the support to make it happen. Just need to PM me.
It would be so helpful, but it would take forever to mark tbh so lmao it makes sense if they don't.. but math adv...??po
Maths Adv was done once upon a time, but it was too much to manage and mark especially with Ext1 and Ext2 going on simultaneously. Whilst I would love to bring back Maths Adv, we would kinda need like a big army of markers to cover all three maths levels if that happens.

Wish I could but I didn't even get a band six in Business Studies back in the day (ironic given where I ended up career-wise)... that, and I probably wouldn't be able to commit to three weeks in October. Let me know if you think I can help/contribute in some other way though.
