When you take into account that there are 66 credit points of core units of study in the bachelor of commerce degree, that leave 78 or 13 x 6 units of study left. Most majors (e.g. Economics, Marketing, Business Information Systems) require at least 7 x 6 credit points OUTSIDE of core units.

If that didnt make sense, basically when you take everything into consideration, you need 7 units for Economics, 7 units for Marketing, 7 Units for Business IS, BUT there are only 13 units available. My question is... WTF? Is the uni trying to rort summer school fees out of us. How can there be a commerce degree where you are unable to double major in business info and economics, or marketing (very popular majors)?? Is there anyway around this??

You can double major at usyd within the 3 years without summer school. Thats the impression i got from the info i read anyway.

I think in a double degree you only major in one area for each course though.

As much as I understood it, since we're doing eng/comm.. only way you can double major in commerce is through overloading.(basically you just take in more units than you're required) someone correct me if Im wrong.

yeah but irrespective of the course I am personally doing, the fact remains that from the core units of study required, there are only 13 units left to take 2 majors from, which seems unfair when mos full majors are 7 units each. The info you read does say that you can double major in 3 years, but it doesnt say WHAT majors. I mean, you can take International Business and Economics, because IB needs only 5 non core units. But im talking about the more popular courses. I dont understand USYD's logic, especially since some of their core units seem pointless. Is there no way of doing a double major in subject areas which require 7 units each when there are only 13 units to work with?

It's much more difficult to have double majors nowadays, which is why many new commerce students select a second major from international business or accounting (e.g. ACCT1001 and 1002 are core, so you only need 6 more ACCT subs to major in it).

I've also found a lot of students doing management majors because they can be so easily fitted in. I wanted to do a marketing major with international business but due to doing junior political economy units (doing 2 senior ones for IB) I couldn't fit it in. Yet I can fit in a management major with 6 credit points to spare.

ECON1001, ECON1002, MKTG1001 are all commerce core units and you only need to do 2 of them to fulfil the compulsory units of study for a management major. You then need to complete 1 compulsory senior subject and an additional 5 from a selection that includes the core units ECOF3001 and WORK2218. So I've done 4 out of 8 subjects because they are core units!

And yes I agree that there are so many core units, several fairly useless (eg. Government Business and Society, Business Strategy) that they are making it too hard for B Commerce students that aren't set on their majors right from the the start of their degree to do a double major. At the same time they seem to be indirectly promoting their management major.
