What happens if you make up a couple of Economics statistics in the trials or hsc that seem legit? Will the markers know? Will you get marked down?

No, most markers won't know. Except for the big, main, important, reported-in-the-news ones - such as the unemployment rate, the inflation rate, the economic growth rate, latest Gini coefficient.

If your stats are ballpark, then they won't care at all. They never bother to check. Also, if you make up stats, make them up for specific topics (e.g. the % increase in crude oil exports to China and Japan together over the last 5 years - a bit of exaggeration but you get what I mean).

This is something not to worry about (that much), trust me, half of my stats in the HSC External were made up and I ended up doing well anyway.

So, in summary, go for it, but with common sense and a bit of restrain.

Hope that helps!

As long it sounds good and legit, no worries. However, you should once on a while have a look at stats to observe trends and this could be used in your extended response or could even be a question.

But really, the markers don't really have the time to look it up unless it's some tight-ass teacher.

I was told that it is not a good idea to make up stats for economics since the teacher usually knows what they're on about. Subjects like legal studies, it is very easy to make up cases and newspaper article (NOT laws) because it is unlikely that they know every article that was written in every paper in the past 5 or so years. The equivalent would be like making up formulae in physics

I would make a proper effort to remember the correct stats, i would only make them up if i had a mind blank in the exam. Whilst you can get away with slightly varied stats (e.g 0.5 off), if will be fairly obvious you have made them up if you're well off the actual figure.

Moral of the story, make the effort to revise them and make them up if you haven't got any other options.
