Hey,
I need to learn. What should I do, just go around in my friend's car for like 12 hours straight until I don't stall? Or should I get someone remotely "professional" to teach me?

If you know how to do it, then just practice with someone in the car.

If you have NFI what a clutch is, then get a professional to teach you.

i'd go friend's if he/she lets you. At least get the feel for manual. Then maybe get 1-2 pro lessons to start you off. Wait I doubt you're on L's so yeh stick with friend and do it twice over a period of a week, buy a manual:D

Hahaha I love the clutch, its the best thing ever invented. How else can you rev up the engine in a traffic jam (besides putting it in neutral?) :)
Haha yeah my friend got a Holden Astra 89 model, it goes heaps hard! :)
I'm on red auto p's btw, if i get a car I'll just redo the test.

yeah, you'll need a fully licensed driver with you if you have a restricted auto license.

You can either redo the test, or wait till your Greens. Thats what I did.

Are you serious?


Ooh my friend is also on red p's. He also has a restricted licence as well (He got caught at 134km down Picton Road lol - 44km over the limit). But yeah I'[m only going to go on the sidestreets and a bit of the Camden Valley Way / Hoxton Park Road once I get the feel of it and not stall.

Haha teach me how to learn online. I doubt you'd be able to get the friction point properly without practice. I'd be freaking out, like with the people who tailgate you and leave you no room for error (i.e. rolling back). But thats I guess a fear that I'd have to get over.

Ooh I also have an access to a manual van. Its like the biggest thing ever, I don't know if I can control it lol, I'm only like 174cm, I'm not that tall lol. Would that be a good idea?

Also, I have 9 months left on my reds. :-/

My bf did that... idk what he broke [he didnt know the details]... but it ended up being a few grand... and his mate was nice enough to say "dw"...

And in the end, he still doesn't know how to drive manual properly =D

My ex was on the verge of buying a new manual car when he reached his greens.. so he took 3-4 lessons with a pro, bought his car, then learnt the whole way from there.. I remember the first two weeks he'd still stall going uphill starts..

I guess it depends on what car it is. Its either going to be a Holden Astra 89 or Some Toyota van.

okay. screw the waiting idea then. I only waited like a month or two.

on the van idea thats not a bad idea. I drive a work van sometimes and it's easy.

The thing about van's are they have lots of torque. You can let the clutch out pretty much the whole way on the work van and it goes.
This is bad when switching to a car. I kept stalling due to a lack of revs.

I don't have a manual car now, but I should be getting one soon, in a few months. Just thinking of practicing early so I don't stall on an important trip. Also I'm really afraid of those people who tailgate you at a traffic light, leaving you to (what seems to be) zero margin of error for you to roll back.

im on my L's and the only car ive ever driven has been manual, never been behind the wheel of an automatic. check out youtube for some interesting tutorials, though their all on american type cars, though still very relevant.
if youre worried about learning manual, you shouldnt be, the hardest part is moving from a standing start. the first time i drove manual, with my dad as instructor, we didnt even move anywhere, i stalled about 5 times, my dad got frustrated and kicked me out of the car. if you want to learn dont go into traffic like i did and bloody embarrass yourself. find a quiet street, where the road is flat, and go back and forth.

IDIOTS GUIDE TO TAKING OFF: -
- start the car (make sure its in neutral first!)
- press the clutch all the way down, put into gear one, and while holding the clutch down, give the car the tiniest bit of gas (that little thing that measures the revs shouldnt go past 1, if it your pushing the gas too hard), then slowly come off the clutch, and voila, the car starts to move!
- remember the reason a car stalls is that it tries to take off, but you havent provided it with any gas

true, but there are other reasons. Poor gear clutch coordination is another reason it stalls, it doesn't engage the gears properly so the drivechain would be driving....nothing. I'm just worried about rolling back haha

Might be able to drive one tomorrow or within the next two weeks, i'll tell you guys how I go

Hint: the word stall will come up often :eek:

Idiots guide to manual:

1. Clutch down for starting, stopping and changing gears.
2. Clutch come up, accelerator goes down.
3. If you can, coast around in neutral. Downshifting is for weiners.
4. 1st gear is also for weiners.
5. Using the handbrake for hillstarts is unnecessary.

Haha (for 3) I never knew that, my friend used to downshift all the time
For 4, you need first when you start
For 5, I think I'll do that till I get better, thanks.

does anyone know why people leave their cars in gear one, and not neutral, when its parked?
