Hey guys, just finished my exams so I'll get to work on an example. I'd like if you guys could input what you would like to see in a review that would make it more helpful for you.

Math1081 Otherwise known as Discrete Mathematics is a core subject for all Computer Science students as well as Mathematics students in UNSW, and so it will be very relevant for the vast majority of you.

I should release it by today night or tomorrow.

Hello everyone,

this is just an example not a final version of what a review might look like. Once again, this is from my experience, if you disagree (assuming you did the course) and you have a different opinion, feel free to share yours. To reiterate, this is my opinion, my judgement, make your decisions on your own accord but let this help you form it.

Any comments and suggestions for what other aspects to add on?

That looks really good I think it would be good if you made the rating stand out a bit more (like in bold or something) but the advice and information was useful and specific

Yeah I just made a quick draft, didn't focus much on the style. Is there any other stuff you'd want to know so its more relevant? or would you like this type of format from now on?

I think that it would be good if you compressed the first page a bit so you could include a really brief summary of your thoughts as a sorta overview, it would make things feel a bit more organised

1. Maybe we could add in advice about the teaching team for each subject. Like each contributor discusses about their lecturer/tutor (perhaps identifying them with their initials only to avoid privacy concerns).

2. You could make a point about whether or not the textbook is necessary. Almost every unit of study says they have a content textbook, but whether it's actually used regularly is a different story, and this info could help some students decide whether they need to buy (or let's be honest, pirate) the book.

Oh lol I don't think anyone uses the textbook for introductory courses, personally I haven't touched any of them. I'll include them or anyone else can, if I use reference textbooks. I'll put that in next draft

This is not a full review by the way, just more of a quick draft. I'll make it more thorough if everyone's okay with this type of formatting + the advice given here.

From what I remember about MATH1081 it also has aspects of proofs in the course where we have to learn to write the negation and stuff. Essentially MATH1081 which is Discrete Maths takes slices of cake from all the following Year 12 maths units

Mathematics Standard (Networks)
Mathematics Advanced (Venn Diagrams)
Mathematics Extension I (Permutations and Combinations)
Mathematics Extension II (Proof).

I don't think lecturers/tutors care that much tbh. Like their names are normally on the lecture slides which get shared around like wildfire lol. Also some lecturers teach way better than others in my personal experience, like I would attend their lectures cause it was enjoyable whilst others I straight up sack. I'm interested to see what your take on 1131/1141/1151 cause imo extremely chill math course lol. Should be HD'ing that.

lol i put less effort into that than 1081. very very chill course. more enjoyable as well

does 1141 just build further on top of 3u/4u i think i have the course notes/material pdf
iirc complex nums, matrices, vectors, taylor series and some other stuff
Everything is in reach with intuition or is builded upon, the last part is the new stuff but it isnt even that bad.

You shouldn't be studying 1131/1141 in year 11, you're better off just consolidating your basics in 2u and then going onto study 1131.

Yeah I want to do something in data science or modelling so it has value in that, I'm more interested in the application of maths so I'm going down an applied/stats route most likely. Regardless, I've been enjoying studying both subjects since when they have that perfect amount of seclusion in that you don't feel like you're studying maths when doing a computing course and vice-versa but you can definitely see the overlap.

Your other question can't be answered though, its way too open ended and there's so much factors to consider e.g

What career/industry are you interested in? Does it necessitate a specialisation or deeper study of maths?
Are you satisfied just studying computing courses?
Are you thinking of post-graduate options? Do you have an interest in continuing maths?
How will you manage your time?
Is the workload too overbearing for you?
......

For me so far, no idea. I've timetabled my first year to be purely introductory courses and I'm saving Lvl 2 for next year just in case I want to switch to a related degree.

no i dont do those courses, im thinking of doing stats major lol

also im doing phys1a phys1b this year
unironically learn your 1st yr maths properly. u start getting fucked in 2nd yr. also stats is definitely a lot more useful lmao
