Hey who here does maths at UoW? What are the strengths of UoW in mathematical research? For instance, UNSW is strong at analysis while Usyd is strong at algebra. I am interested in taking some courses at UoW.

Well with research you can't just look at the uni. On a reputation of research, UOW isn't very recognised.

Then again, with research you have to find a good supervisor that specialises in the field of study you want to persue.

A top uni like...... Harvard? may not have such a person, even though they are a top uni.

I don't know pure maths that well, since I've been trying to avoid all the pure maths subjects...

But I know there are about 4 pure maths subjects and if you do the advanced stream you get to do a project with a lecturer.

Avoid them!? They're the best ones, don't get me started on applied!

I think if you are going to do a straight maths degree - try and do the advance - that way you get to avoid the math187/188 - they are boring as shit. But then you have a subject that puts a years worth of work into 1/2 a year.

Also the research projects you do in second and third year would be good. But then I also heard if you go good in math187/188, you may be able to get into those subjects anyway.

What are you guys talking about? stat is the worst.

lol, I would have agreed with you on stat before, but I'm kinda appreciating it now... seems like a very useful thing to know.

Well i'd be starting from 3rd year, so i assume either way i wont be doing it But yeah, i always take advanced maths when offered.

As for stats, i dont mind it, i just never want to do it again. But like jm said, i do see its value to some areas. I'd take stats over applied any day if i had to choose one though.

Who would want to do maths past school level?

Are there any job prospects other than being a teacher?

There are heaps of job options. Mathematics/Statistics is needed in many areas.
Although.. I guess Pure Maths is a bit limited.

eg.
- Consultation
- Data Analysis
- Finance
- Risk Analysis
- Weather Forcasting
- Various areas of science (Like calculating nuclear reactions)
- Engineering

Pure maths isnt limited, computation alone has its foundations in pure mathematics, not applied

Ok - i can see the point of stat, I can see how it is useful. But I never really liked subjects that were just - here is the formula work the stuff out, then say what it means. I prefer to work out the formula for myself. I think it is because I don't know enough stat, to really understand it properly.
