about actuary degree at maq....is it well recognised overseas?? i'm very curious if unsw's international recognition would outweigh maq uni's actuary recognition..

also, anyone be able to provide the rough numbers on wat most ppl take up as 2nd degree if they are doing double degree with actuary?

any help would be good thanks

recognition - not sure. I doubt in the actuarial field that unsw's recognition outweights maq, but if your looking at non-traditional areas of work, then it prolly will

mebbe someone else who knows can answer that

people either do finance, or maths with actuarial studies. its about the same there.
then you get the weird ppl who do some other combination (e.g. me )

The Actuarial degree at MQ is internationally recognised, because it has a well-established system (for over 30 years). Whereas, the Actuarial degree at UNSW isn't even ten-years old, and so I don't think would have much (or at least, as much) recognition.

The majority go for doubles at MQ, but it doesn't matter (an explanation can be found somewhere in another thread in this forum, too lazy, atm).

from memory, most ppl do actuarial studies/applied finance...cant remember the rest..

True (and in fact, I'm tryin' to fit more of my posts in brackets these days ).

Also true (however, most people who combine it with App Fin don't know what Accounting is like when they first enrol ).

the first two is ACST/applied finance and ACST/eco, don't know which one is better for me

ye those were the 2 i contemplated. but after doing a semester of econ *yawn*...i think my applied finance option was wise.

i put actuary with law as first....but wondering if applied finance or the mathematics/statistics sciences would be more 'useful' if i wantd to pursue actuary career?

i dont know how law could be that useful as a double with actuarial anyway if your aim is to be an actuary.. its not like you need such a comprehensive understanding of the law

on the other hand having a deeper understanding of the background of the equations and theorems you use in actuarial, or how exactly statistics tell you the information you are using would seem more related

Alot of smartass planners i know doing acst/law coz they working on some super clever plan that if pulled off in future would seriously...be good. (I have my own plan of course which I think is better). Sworn to secrecy, therefore will not expose beneficial exploitation publicly, which would....be bad.

With the degrading employment prospects for actuarial grads and the huge demand for computer skills in general, I'd say actuarial/comp science is probably the most promising. Put it this way, not every company can afford an actuary. But imagine if you can work for some software company designing software that uses actuarial models to simulate contingencies, there'd be a huge market to sell to. Look at what MYOB or Quicken has done for the accounting industry. A few decades, people used to write out each transaction on paper. With actuarial software, even fish n chips shops can determine their net present values of future inflows, or expected provision for bad debts.

(excuse my language, ive juz finished writing 3 econ essays, hence i sound nerdy...but im not. flyn however is =p).

interesting ....so doing commerce/engineering majoring in actuary and software wouldn't be too bad? i had minor thoughts about that combination but seemed the 2 fields were too specialised to be useful for each other...
but then again...if i make it into actuarial studies and kikass in it, there would be employment anyway....

actuarial studies, eh? i reckon ill get my actuarial degree + mathematics and just do teachin', wouldn't that be so much easier... there's always jobs for teachers.
