yer, but if you are in doubt - its like a soft cushion you can fall back on

also, not all quadratics factorise to give rational numbers - so some quadratics require the formula as some answers contain surds

True that, but when theres left over time in the exam its best to make sure. But factorising is easy as anyway.
I panic more with bitches like this: 3x+5/x+2 >3x+4
Thats the type of questions that take forever and the smallest mistake can throw off everything.

Yeah, try to factorise it before using the quadratic formula. Personally - I really dislike it. =S

After practise, using the quadratic formula will be a breeze. Plus you could probably do it in your head after a while, if you're good at that sort of stuff.
