Hey,

Out of curiosity, suppose I want to study Extenstion 2 Maths in Yr 12, does my teacher have any say in it? That is, if I don't do extremely well in Mathematics Extension 1, can they not allow me to do Extension 2 Math in year 12?

Thanks :)

nope it's totally up to you

BUT . . . if you did perform that poorly, the teachers would definitely strongly recommend you not to take up 4 U!

Some teachers will be stubborn and not allow you to do it and tell you it's up to the teachers to decide.

In the case if you really want to undertake 4U maths, and the teacher won't allow it, you should bring your parents into the situation making a formal complaint to the principal/head teacher

if you think about it, ext 2 maths is only going to burden you more. it takes time and effort to bring ext 1 maths marks up, and it is a totally different story in keeping up for ext 2 maths.

No teacher stopped you from picking your current subjects did they? It's no different for an extension course. :)

If you don't get 75+ in your extension 1 school papers, extension 2 would be quite ... say... challenging.

But it depends on the paper. Last year the highest mark in our extension one class was 80% due to the difficulty of the paper so i'd look at rank rather than marks.
Do Extension 2 if your in the top half of your class or are prepared to work at least 2.5 hours a day on math

Cool. I generally spend about three hours on math each day anyway :D

Our school is telling us not to do the subject if we don't get over 90... which means our class will have 5 students :D

Somehow I think it's not within their discretion as this year's class has 40 students.

I guess the only possible way the school could stop you from doing it is if they don't have a teacher to teach it, or they impose a quota on the class (which should be around 30, not some bullshit number like 1-5).

That can't stop you from enrolling in it though as far as I know, if you really want to do it, you can teach yourself and sit the HSC exam.

Another way they could prevent you from enrolling is if one of your other subject line clashes with the one you want to do.

In that situation, it's a pain to be in.

That's something I'm not too sure about.

The principal submits the subjects you've chosen as your HSC subjects. If you can't enrol into a subject at school due to lack of teacher or line clash etc.. it would seem you may not be able to enrol.

But then again, say you did, you'd have no teacher, no assessments, no classes. You would still attain the highest exam mark as your moderated assessment mark?

I think they'd have to be other factors involved since you will not be completing any internal assessments.

Good point, if there were two or more students who wanted to enrol in the subject, then they would need to be assessed I guess.

If it's just the one student, it doesn't matter whether their assessment mark is 0 or 100, their assessment mark is going to be their HSC exam mark regardless.

I remember Ultimate didn't have a teacher for 4u maths, he taught himself from the textbook (and maybe his tutor?) and came out with a band 6 (90-91 IIRC).

We have not yet had any assessments and therefore I havent recieved marks such as 20% for my exams etc, but I don't know if I will do extremely well (90 and above), and I'm just worried that if I don't receive those marks, my teacher may not let me study extension 2 math.

What do you think an extension 2 student should be recieving in extension 1 math? That is, what marks should they recieve so that when they are studying ext 2 math, they won't find it too difficult..
