Im having a hard time trying to choose between UNSW or USYD for mechatronic engineering.

I know that UAI cut-offs dont reflect quality of the courses, but how come such a big gap difference. UNSW - 78.10 and USYD -92.25

Does this mean that the USYD is more popular for this particular course.

Could someone tell me abt how many ppl (undergraduates) enrolled for mechatronics at USYD in 2005.

Well, one of the reasons for the UAI cutoff difference is the difference in the different ways the courses at UNSW and USyd are structured.

IIRC, at UNSW, to do mechatronics (along with aero, manufacturing and mechanical engineering people), you enrol in a mechanical engineering degree, which has common courses in the first 2 years of the degree. Then, in the last 2 years, you specialise in whatever you want. (However, as I don't go to UNSW, I'm not very up-to-date on the happenings over at Randwick, so take anything I say about UNSW with a pinch of salt).

On the other hand, at USyd, you start doing specialist mechatronics courses in first year (although you still have many courses in common with the other aero/mechanical engineering people, and to a lesser extent, the people doing BSc's)

So IMHO, at UNSW, the UAI cutoff is the 'lowest common denominator' for entry into all of the specialisations of mechanical engineering, while at USyd, the cutoff is different for each specialisation (sort of). However, that's not to say that either of the unis is 'better' than the other - each has their own advantages as far as this is concerned.

I don't do mechatronics, so I'm not sure about the enrollments in '05, but a couple of other people (e.g. withoutaface) at these forums do, and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to fill you in.

Regards and best of luck for your uni selections

I can't tell you about UNSW, but mechatronics at USyd is very good. The staff that I've been in contact with so far are by far and away among the best from any school in the university, and they are also very responsive to student feedback. For example when there were too few tutors in the labs the first couple of weeks, I emailed the lecturer and told him about it and the next week he was there personally to make sure that the people who needed help got it.

2nd sem first year we were screwing round with circuitry to make patterns of LED lights in succession, stuff like NAND, NOT gates and flip flops.
