As David said, some colleges let you go catered (ie, you pay for food, get food, choose whether or not to eat aforementioned food) or self catered (you buy/cook for yourself)

When I was looking into colleges, I know self catered was about $120 a week (UWS, CSU), and catered was a reasonable amount more than this.

Presuming you're a med wannabe, I know Newcastle halls of residence offer both options, but I can't remember which was which. Do some research here

yo rob

hmm living away from home is .... EXPENSIVE

currently on campus at UNewc. I'm in one of the nice rooms with an aircon/ensuite etc for $219 a week plus the food. Good eh?
I drive back every weekend to work now. Earn about 100 a week, 20-30 goes into petrol, 10-20 on other expenses like going out+more food. Then the rest is saved for textbooks or bday pressies etc. I'm also busy trying to pay my parents back for getting me a car.

Did i mention that med textbooks are fken expensive? Yeah, that's right... It's ok just buying 1 or 2, but then we need physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, clinical medicine, pathology, histology and the list goes on -->A LOT OF $$$$$

anyway, lexi's case is different since he has to pay for the plane trip to WA and back a few times a year, but then again my petrol will probably be higher :S

Going to move into self-catered college next year for $118 per week...sweet

Is the food really that bad? Also, can you NOT pay for the food as part of your college fees?
well at my college the food is usually good, sometimes not great and other times really good. However, the main problem is that the food gets really boring after a while and you just get tired of it

the thing that annoys me the most is that during the 2-3week holidays i usually go home and that's like 600bux worth of accommodation+food etc gone..and this happens about 3 times a year

You have to pay for the small breaks? I only have to pay one week of the midsemester breaks ($245) and one week at college costs the same as a one way fare to Sydney. So if I've got a break longer than two weeks, and don't have to pay the college for any of it, I go home.

The problem is in second semester, when I have to pay one week (included in fee schedule) but not the other (only two weeks in midsem break). This means I have to choose between flying to sydney for what is effectively three airfares, or staying in Perth for an extra $245. Sadly I'm probably going to stay here, though if I'm lucky I'll be able to stay at a friend's place or something.

ah fair enough

yeah i have to pay NON - STOP from 21st Feb (a bit earlier) alllllll the way til the end of november. About 41weeks per year i think at $219 a week. So yeah, even if i had a 4 week holiday i'd still have to pay even though im not eating the food, using the water/electricity etc. :(
It's ok, ive been spending some time there during the holidays to hang out with friends there.

oh yeah, just got the new guyton... omg it's soo good

med books cost alright, but the problem is that we need so many >< and the library isn't exactly something to rely on completely

not much point getting a newer anatomy book, like how much are our bodies gonna change from the 4th-5th edition :p hehe

New Guyton - tempted to buy and replace my 10e now that a reference I need in the index isn't there.

New Moore - I bought 4e the same week 5e came out from the AMA bookstore, found out I'd been screwed and asked them for a trade. They didn't realise they were selling old stock and readily agreed. So good too, since 4e was full of errors (and half my cohort bought it at the beginning of the year, eager bastards).

New Robbins - There is no new Robbins, the AMA guy was talking about a new Baby Robbins. I think I will pick it up to tide me over for PBL until Med III (when Big Robbins 8e should be coming out).

Speaking of anatomy, I'm thinking I need either Netter's Atlas, Student Gray's, Rohen (Color Atlas) or a combination of the above. Any experiences, recommendations?

Rohen is REALLY REALLY good, I loved it.

We were only given the option of Rohen, or some other cheaper one, and IMO the extra 40 bucks or whatever it was for Rohen was def. worth it.

Lexi, lots of our 2nd yrs (and more than a few 3rd yrs come to think of it) told us to get netters atlas - i haven't got it yet because its a bit pricey but it looked quite good when i flicked through it. That said, i haven't seen any of the others you mentioned to compare it with.

what about buying GREY'S Anatomy before getting into Med?! :p
Before I got into med, Grey's Anatomy didn't exist.

The copy of Gray's I bought, on the other hand, was just a coffee table book really. A facsimile of the first edition is of little more use than a piece of interest reading.
