For USYD, medicine (MBBS) is a post-graduate course, which means that you have to have a bachelor's degree first... your bachelor degree can be in any field, but most people choose something science related, like med science... after you grad, you apply to ACER (Australian Council of Educational Research) to do their GAMSAT (Graduate Medical Sciences Admission Test). It's a bloody long and hard test... Then they measure your uni GPA (Grade Point Average), GAMSAT result and then rank all the people until they fill in their places... Btw, the degree at USYD is 4 years...

For UNSW, medicine (MBBS) is an undergraduate course, which means you can apply directly from year 12... you first have to register your interest at this page by July 25th, then you download their application form and CV from this page, and send it off to them by July 25th... you also must do the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine Admissions Test), which is on July 30th. I think the registration period of UMAT is over though... They weigh your HSC mark (UAI95+), UMAT result and interview mark (if your UAI estimate and UMAT result is high enough they give you an interview) equally and then rank everyone who applies. The intake is about 140 people per year, with about 5000 applicants, so the competition is crazy... The course is 6 years.

umm wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having the UMAT test as a prerequisite? :)
