What contaminants cant membrane filters filter out?

... membrane filters avoid the need to chemically treat water right.... so what could they possibly miss out? some bacteria?

Any help would be appreciated thanks

virus - much smaller than bacteria.

for bacteria, i believe it really depends on the pore size of filter and size of bacteria. I used .2 um filter before, and supposingly, should filter out bacteria oO

I can't be bothered to remember the exact diameter of the pore size.

All I'll remember is that the smaller the pore size the finer the particles can be blocked out, from solid grains of sand then bacteria to viruses.

Membrane filters are 500 micrometers in diameter. They will filter out the bacteria and viruses. That's why the water won't need to be chlorinated.

However with sewerage paticles and sand particles, they're too big to pass through. They kind of clog up the system.

This is a good question though. Membrane filters are pretty effective, other then they get clogged up too quickly... hmm.
