It is good to see the level of support getting behind trying to find this woman. The media are doing a good job for once.

The fact that her handbag has now been found in a laneway that police already searched previously seems suspicious though.

But Detective Inspector John Potter, from the homicide squad, said police had already searched that lane in the hours after Ms Meagher, an Irish national, was reported missing on Saturday.

"There’s two options, either police in the original search missed the bag or the bag has since been placed at that laneway after the police searched it originally," he told ABC 774, where Ms Meagher worked as a member of the Local Radio Victoria team.

I'm pretty sure the handbag is a decoy. Police left 'no stones unturned'.
I pray that the woman is found safe and unhurt.

It just seems unlikely it was the husband as logistically it seems like it would be hard to pull off. She leaves the bar at 2am. He reports her missing at 12pm the next day. Assuming she got home safely and they got into a fight or something; that gives say an 8 hour window approximately for him to move her someplace without anyone seeing. Then he has the balls to go and plant her handbag in a laneway while the area is swarming with alert locals and media? It just seems unlikely.

a lot can happen in 8 hours...

guy in the blue hoodie... have a gut feeling she knew exactly who it was... her demeanour to me suggest she was pretty intoxicated as well...

lapse in judgement perhaps: maybe she came on to strong to a guy that just didn't know the meaning of no, or, she is not exactly an unattractive women maybe trying to break off an affair, maybe the husband found out about a possible affair and overreacted... highly doubt the latter...

I know this is wild speculation, but if the media reports are right about the u-turn car etc its possible it could be two people involved. One scares her the other pretends to try rescue her (hence why she followed him)

*shrug* sounds possible that this guy has been involved in other incidents as well

fair enough...

agree with the 2 or more people theory... got the impression it would be a homicide too, no ransom etc...

hope the guy sings like a bird and gets 12 inch penis in gaol (IF!!! he did it)

That is terrible. The article says they are unknown to each other and that the man has no serious criminal history.

If this man did kill her, then why did none of the security cameras capture her being abducted? And if it was an opportunistic attack, murder is a seriously big step up crime for someone without a criminal history.

Because there aren't CCTV camera everywhere

No criminal history doesn't mean they haven't committed crimes before it just means they haven't been caught

"A man is expected to be charged with the rape and murder of missing ABC radio employee Jill Meagher.

The suspect was helping police to locate the body of Ms Meagher, 29, which is believed to be in metropolitan Melbourne."

Terrible case. If all that's been said is true I think it's interesting that so many women had been attacked in the area possibly by this same man, but often gone unreported, which is terrible in this day and age. On the other hand, in this day and age, I've no doubt that the amount of media, espescially social media attention this has garnered has helped the investigation.

From a journo on Twitter:

Police in Melbourne are now searching a field for a body after a 6 hour interview with a POI tonight.

A 41 year old man has been charged with one count of murder, one of rape and one of abduction. He'll appear in court tomorrow.

#jillmeagher husband has arrived at St Kilda police centre. He was informed his wife was murdered at 5:15 this afternoon. Feel for him

They have found her body.

Homicide Squad Missing Persons Unit detectives have charged a 41-year-old Coburg man over the death of Gillian Meagher.

Adrian Bayley has been charged with one count of murder and one count of rape after a body was located in Gisborne South around 1.45am this morning.

Bayley faced an out of sessions court hearing at the St Kilda Road Polce Complex this morning and has been remanded in custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later this morning.

Police continue to conduct forensic analysis of the scene.
