Ahem.. I did say their exports are the best things they manufacture..
they also sell it at home you know. it's not like all things 'made-in-china' are crap - you get what you pay.

i'm not sure if any of you has done any corporate history, but in post-WW2 era, 'Made in Japan' meant crap cheap imitations. it was not until a little company which started making pocket radios that Japan became a dominant force in consumer technology (the identity of this little company i'll leave for you guys to figure out). i guess it's the same case for mainland brands like TCL and Haier.

ok, so what's the difference between GSM and CDMA?
sorry for being so ignorant
GSM is a global standard for mobile phones. CDMA is an updated version of older analog technology. It has far greater range than GSM, but lacks some of the security features, and because CDMA phones don't have sim cards, once you've chosen a provider, you can't change it too easily (unless you flash the phone, but that's a whole different story.)

GSM would be the better choice, for what you're attempting to do.

the Sharp GX15 (Japanese) is the ONLY Japanese/Korean phone which is available in Australia that is up to standards/technology standards with Korea and Japan.

The rest of the Japanese/Korean phones available here are toned down for aus, or simply several lines behind.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a phone that doesn't have video (with audio) capabilities (camera goes without saying now). Just because the Australian market is behind, doesn't mean you have to be ;)

I quote a recent conversation with a friend of mine.

My phone doesn't have anything!!

Can your phone receive calls?

Yes.

Can your phone make calls?

Yes.

Then it does everything a phone is supposed to do.

mm, phones with video are cool (if you're not a pervert and don't use it the wrong way!)
but i don't mind not having video, i just want a FLIPPY ONE!!! :p
and polyphonic/mp3 ringtones would be good, and i agree, cameras are essential.
so any suggestions?

Yes.

When it costs alot, you're probably hearing about global roaming. Different telcos might have partnerships with other overseas telcos that connects you when you are in another country, letting you use your number while you are overseas. This roaming service is quite expensive.

GPRS = General Packet Radio Service.

Technically its quite different to CDMA and GSM, but in short GPRS is designed to send and receive information.....ie...you can use it to get on the net.
