I used Animal Farm as a related for this module but my core text was The Crucible.
Can you tell me what themes/aspects you're focusing on in Brave New World and maybe I can see if I recall any correlations with Animal Farm?

For totalitarianism you could talk about the way Napoleon manipulates fear to gain autonomy i.e. turning the animals against Snowball, using the dogs as enforcers, punishing the hens for complaining.
The way Napoleon forces everyone to work really hard could be likened as socialism if you wanted to compare political ideologies, as well as his suppression of everyone else's political ideals.
Also the whole novel is an allegory for Stalin and the Soviet Union so you could reference that if you think it's relevant to your discussion.

The Man Booker Prize should be awarded to George Orwell’s Animal Farm for a multitude of reasons, such reasons include: its contribution to literacy, its addressal of universally important themes, it’s an enjoyable read and is considered a classic in modern times, and the way it's composed is that of a professional manner. The Man Booker Prize is awarded to novels that exemplify extraordinary works in the field of creative writing, through their usage of: effective and organised storytelling, development of characters and settings, addressal of complexities deemed important universally, and effectively using literary techniques and the english language to better the read of the novel all of which Animal Farm has exemplified.
There is no doubt that George Orwell’s Animal Farm has had a significant effect on the diverse range of published novels in the field of literacy and creative writing. The main reason Animal Farm is still a text being reviewed in the classroom, and being read by people worldwide is due to its addressal of universal themes. Animal Farm was published in 1945, one month before the end of the Second World War. The novel mimics the propaganda used during the war, and incorporates terminology such as ‘Animalism’ which is loosely based on the Stalinist Russia during that same time period.
The novel follows the rebellion of the animals against the man they perceive as a tyrant, Farmer Jones. During the overthrow of him and his men, the Farm is re-named to Animal Farm and is mutually agreed to be led by the Pigs. The pigs, turn out at first, to be conservative, prepared and calculating, however it’s when this lust for power is incorporated into the plot do these themes first make an appearance. The first of these universal themes is that of corruption. Animalism, when first theoretically conceived by Old Major was capable of being an organised and fair structure, as is with most governing ideologies. This is correlating with real life means of governing, including Marxism and Communism both of which had positive potential, theoretically. However, the Pigs soon become corrupt and violate numerous rules that were once held sacred by the followers of Animalism. Once more, hinting at real life events, the overthrow of political leaders, the corruption associated with running a government, all of which can be connected to the Russian Revolution, which Orwell has said inspired certain aspects of Animal Farm. Observably, Orwell’s ability to mask real life political ideologies in a textual format, is one of many reasons that deem Animal Farm worthy of the Man Booker Prize.
Universal themes such as trust, corruption and selfishness are all evident in the events that occur in the novel. Early signs of corruption can be connected to Napoleon’s willingness to alleviate the human interaction rule to benefit himself, however, it isn’t fully realised until the end of the novel. Not only does Napoleon talk with humans, he sits with them, eats with them, laughs with them, plays cards with them, walks like them and most horrifyingly admires them. Napoleon was an advocate of increasing the farm’s defence against humans, yet in the end he is seated with them ‘’Napoleon was so gratified that he left his place and came around the table to clink his mug against Mr Pilkington’s before emptying it.’’. This is representative of how when an offer presents itself, we often diminish the person we are, and become the person we once hated. It correlates with man's neediness and how humans will abandon their morals, their own kind, if a better offer presents itself and they benefit more from it. Orwell’s ability to communicate that with the audience, resonates his ability to instill a moral or belief into a reader. The ability to help a reader extract a particular virtue from your text is a definite quality of a well articulated author.
It isn’t just the factual information imbedded in Animal Farm that renders it a worthy recipient of the Man Booker Prize. Orwell’s ability to compose the novel well, while undertaking a risky concept seals its classification as a work of literary genius. It wasn’t until major political figures such as Leon Trotsky were depicted as pigs did people finally realise the extent of their capabilities and power. Orwell having effectively modified our human qualities to suit the lives of animals, was a gamble, which proved to play out in his favour. We are more focused on the conduct of the pigs due to our perception of them. Animals are usually hunted, used for food, slaughtered, bred and grazed to later be milked, however, when they adopt our human like qualities, do we finally understand the rashness of our greed influenced decisions. This is because we associate animals with the aforementioned traits, but to object that stereotypical view and to incorporate intellect, individual thinking and emotion, can we then empathise and sometimes sympathise with their condition. Identifiably, Orwell’s ability to evoke such emotions and inquisitive attributes in his readers proves he’s a capable author.
How well a novel develops the characters and the setting is an area that needs to be assessed in order to determine its capability of being awarded the Man Booker Prize. Orwell’s development of the character and the setting are both done in a manner that suits the intended ending. The development of characters, is significant in progressing the plot and helping the reader form a judgement of said character. At first, the pigs seem to be wise, as if every decision they made was to better the group and every burden they took upon themselves was taking one for the collective majority. However, when we see the pigs flaunt their intellect and yield it to reign supreme over the other animals, do we understand their true intentions. Further into the novel we understand that they are unfazed by frequent lying, and that the Seven Commandments that they had enforced was only a ruse to confine the other animals, and that they didn’t need be restricted by such laws. It’s not until the near end, and finally, the end, do we understand the extent of what the pigs would do to maximise monetary profit. A vital moment in the development of the pigs is when they’d rather have Boxer, one of the most, if not, the most loyal workers, sent to a glue factory instead of paying for his medical needs.
The setting is developed in a similar way to that of the animals, and that’s dominantly contributed to the fact that, whatever decision the animals make, it reflects on the tone of the setting. The first couple of pages depicting life on a farm are rather expected, however, when we first learn of Old Major envisioning the overthrow of the human race do we learn that there is a pending hostility in the atmosphere. It’s not until the pigs over-take the farm does the setting once again develop, it’s now more unorthodox, yet calm and chores that would usually be completed by humans are completed by the animals. Then, the expulsion of Snowball and the power rise of Napoleon saw the setting once again become very tense and gloomy. It was almost as if they were living under Farmer Jones’s governing policies, but yet they were carried out by one of their own. It’s not until Animal Farm becomes violent and used to generate cash for the pigs does the setting change once again. The laborious conditions, and enslavement see the setting actually turn melancholy, that what the animals fought for wasn’t just not achieved, but proved to spit back in their faces. The setting turned totalitarianistic, and emitted a subservient vibe, similar to the one experienced in Nineteen Eighty-Four .Orwell’s ability to take the reader through various scenarios, positioning them on Animal Farm through his descriptive language renders his works worthy to be candidates of the Man Booker Prize.
