In this Week's Economist they made mention:
"hough the country’s best-known building is an opera house, for example, the arts have yet to receive as much official patronage as they deserve. However, the most useful policy to pursue would be education, especially tertiary education. Australia’s universities, like its wine, are decent and dependable, but seldom excellent. Yet educated workers are essential for an economy competitive in services as well as minerals. First, however, Aussies need a bit more self-belief. After that perhaps will come the zest and confidence of an Antipodean California."

Thoughts?
Would you be pleased with pumping more monies into our universities?

And as Howard took $2bn from our universities in aggregate funding over the 12 years he was in power, if you're as passionate as I am about making sure a Liberal government doesn't remove more much needed funding from Australian universities http://bit.ly/ipVbk8

If more money in the university system means a better university - then yes.

Depends, the money has to come from somewhere, and if it means our roads, public merit goods etc are harmed then no.

BUt if it wont affect other things and will improve the system yes

Personally I'd rather spend it on chaplains, baby bonuses and private schools

They could invest in better rural universities and then stop subsidising rural kids' costs to go to a city uni + if they're serious about de-centralising the population, this could be a good start. Or just pour more money into the already established unis (particularly in research initiatives & technology) and try to cement their status as some of the best in the world - it's good for Australia in terms of a better educated workforce, and good for the economy (directly) since we already make a shitload of money from exporting the education sector.

True, i personally do not like it when rural kids can get paid (subsided) to go to the city, the government needs to improve
