I don't get it, as we aren't finding anything related to the velocity? The question involves maximum and minmum. Refer to a textbook, on finding maximum/minimum values using calculus.

A minimum or maximum for a differentiable function will only occur when the gradient is zero or in this context v = 0

I undertsand max and min. I just don't get why we are using it when it is asking for the closest point to the origin. Without seeing the graph, the time when v=0, doesn't mean that it is the closest to the origin. Are we using minimum because of what the graph looks like?

Good observation.

That is correct. In this scenario displacement is always positive. So minimising is the approach we need to take.
