It makes society go faster.
And it makes society more technological/mechanical.
It can also make people more liberal and rebellious - especially motorcycles.
It makes them more likely to do it themselves, and introduces a lot of new relationships and rules.

Because Transformers run on AC motors, this has made it possible to transmit energy over large distances. It means that the standard of living in rural areas has been raised as power distribution is no longer restricted to just urban and industrialised areas.
Motors and the power generated has meant that electricity to every home has become an affordable necessity rather than a luxury and again it has meant that the standard of living has increased.

have a look at the more subtle implications: cars, trucks, trains, airplanes, etc...all use some form of motor that enhances transport, making it faster and more reliable to go to far places.s
it also does some detrimental harm as well - in terms of health, we are so used to driving cars that we have ignored other modes of transport, like cycling or walking.
our ever-reliance upon cars develops within us the unquenchable thirst for oil - hence our sky rocketing oil prices - means we are so dependent upon oil - and how the lack of oil impacts society immenely, economically and socially.
also, without these motors, the 1920s industrialisation would never had occured. consider squirrel-cage-type AC motor - the workhorse of industry. it has helped to churn out loads after loads, created jobs, opened markets, developed economies to what it is today. so the importance of motors in industry shouldnt be unrecognized.

In addition to what everyone else has said, motors have caused unemployment in industries with jobs have been replaced by infrastructure and machines, this mainly occurring in the unskilled jobs. This is also related to the fact that technological improvements in society have caused increased unemployment in these type of industries.

and continuing on from there, in response, both government and businesses have done 2 positive things:Riviet said:
1) provided retraining for retrenched employees so that they are again, skilled to carry out other jobs, and from there,
2) opened up new markets for some of those newly skilled people - examples would include IT, healthcare, etc...mainly services based. another good example is the employment of engineers and scientists in the car manufacturing setting to test the car's performance, comfort, etc...
THUS this also opened up the need for motors also to operate these industries. an example would about the large machinery in hospitals, like CAT machines, MRI machines, centrifuges, etc...(those who will be doing medical physics option topic will understand more of this).
this again, calls for the need for more high-end products, which further increases the demand for more motors to operate machinery to manufacture those necessary parts --> thus, as ive stated before, we have become inseperable from motors as ever before, as much as we are inseperable from the need for basic necessities, e.g. water, shelter, food, electricity - in essense, motors and generators in general have become a basic necessity of human civilisation.
