Multi-tasking during the HSC - looking for some advice

Okay...couldn't think of a better title, so here goes...

Basically, next year I'm going into year eleven and I have a lot of stuff on my plate...
1. AMus for piano
2. Europe Tour for violin/vocals with my school
3. L's
4. and I breed goldfish
5. a website
6. a flourishing LiveJournal
7. and I'm a MSN addict
8. oh, did I mention I'm trying to juggle violin as well?

My parents are sort of worried I'm taking on a bit much...from your experience, what do you think? Could I please get some feedback?

its not hard, cos prelim doesnt have that much workload. I see people at school who do so much extra curicular, and they still rip it up. Just depends on ur time management.

It wouldn't be hard ... playing music is a good distraction from all the studying that is involved with school.

lol oh no, how can you get through yr eleven with a livejournal! it's such a load! don't be such a pussy, half my timetable was double booked, i did 4u of my hsc as well as dealt with some fairly hectic family problems and i did fine. now i've started yr 12 i work as well.

get your priorities straight - the music stuff, fair enough, that's a bit of a load, but please tell me you don't consider livejournal a serious priority. and how is having your Ls a problem? big deal, it's an hour or two a week, and it's not like you HAVE to have lessons every week - i took the week off during my hsc etc. the only serious problem you might have is with your music stuff, and really, taking some time off in yr 11 isn't going to kill you. not the case necessarily in yr 12

In my experience Year 11 is the best time to do any extra-curricular activities that you really want to do, because as soon as you hit Year 12 you'll find yourself with very little time to sprend between a lot of different activities. It's good that you're doing alot of things because it'll just add to your CV, I would like to believe that employers would choose someone who had a balanced HSC year with a few extra actitivies because it shows you can still enjoy yourself under stress.

well first and formost, yeh that may be alot, however there are some things in ur list that i wouldn't really count as factors which get in ur way....such as L's, that's something that u can do in any of the 2 weeks holiday... Goldfish? well i have two cats that i consistently play with and that has has no effect... and well i mean how long will it take u to make sure everything is right for ur goldfish?...........

As for being an MSN addict, well the only way u will stop is by never signing in again.... I was an addict in year 11, but in year 12 i mean i said that's it, and well i neva sined in again, I had an average of signing in once a month.... although now i'm a BOS addict (lol)... but at least u get educated here.........

Well i don't know much about violin and ur lessons... (i.e. how long they are).... but well in year 11 and 12 i've been juggling sports (3 days a week) and a job ( friday, saturday and sunday shifts).... and well it hasn't affected me much, infact it just makes u a beta person but only if u manage ur time properly like what wrx mentioned....

How long is ur Europe tour gonna be?... ur school's not gonna take u on a 3 month tour... is it??????.....

well i think u added a few things that i personally wouldn't count as 'time taking'... but yeh.... i don't think its much and i doubt u should worry, as long as u don't start to fall behind at school, well then it's all cool..... just try to keep ur hat on, and give ur parents proof that u can juggle all those things around... because if u can't well then.....u should cut down a little.....

but i can tell u one thing....... STOP msn right now, because well most of the conversations are rarely ever productive.... but i mean give urself a treat... if u feel u've studied a good amount, or perform good in an exam or something, let ur mind just drift and give urself like an hour on msn, that couldn't hurt (an hour reffering to an hour like a fortnight)..... u can always call ur freinds, and well theres' no point in chatting to people u don't know about plain issues... unless if it's to do with education.... which u could probably obtain from ur freinds anyways... the 1 hour on msn, is not because it's gonna affect u but its a restriction u should place on urself for the future (year 12) ... get used to it now.... however if msn doesn't get in ur way, well then i don't see the problem, but if it does then .....do what was stated above....

enought from me now, good luck... by the way how were ur certificate results???

You juggle violin? Now that is a rare skill- I think you should quit school and pursue that as a career lol.

Seriously though- the only major things on your list are your AMus and your Europe tour. If you want to do your AMus, this is probably the best year to do it- you certainly won't have time in year 12 because the exam will probably be right in the middle of your trials- and unless you do something music related in uni, chances are you won't have enough time to do it then either, especially if you do a particularly demanding course or you have to travel a lot etc.

I don't know how long your Europe tour goes for but unless it's more than 6 weeks it really won't impact you.

I'd also recommend to get your license this year if you need it rather than leaving it until next year just so that you have less things to stress about- otherwise leave it totally until you've done your HSC- no point starting now and then having to re-learn everything again later. Keep in mind that you're probably going to have about ten times the amount of restrictions placed on you if you leave getting your P's until late 2006/ early 2007- probably best to get it ASAP before they get to Nazi-like with it all.

The rest of your list seems quite manageable- not to be dismissive or anything. Year 11 is a good practice for year 12 but the workload is quite a lot less and IT DUN COUNT FOR NUTHIN! Have fun this year, manage your time well, make sure you leave time to hang out with your friends and stuff as well and go into year 12 with a positive attitude and you'll be fine.

I agree- MSN is a really bad habit! But it'd be hypocritical of me to tell you to stop it.

umm i had a casual job throughout prelim and hsc year and i worked 2-3 times a week... did dancing one night a week and had the occasional saturday night performance.. as well as being addicted to bos and msn
most of my assessments were completed the night before and i did alrite.. i actually had time to do them beforehand but im such a procrastinor
i did alot of work before the hsc, went to the library every day for a month and did heaps of practice papers and things.. which is reflected in most of my exam marks being more than my assessment ones (except cafs.. stupid exam grrr)
but yeh managing your time is the main thing.. and although its corny and hardly anyone does it i recommend having a timetable of all your free time to see when you have lessons and when you can work on assessments etc.. if you plan ahead it also means that when you have 3 assessments/the week before you go on tour/your goldfish is sick (ie everything comes at once) you wont be rushed around

Okay...to answer a couple of questions...
* For the School Cert. I got an average of 94.2, with all band 6's.
* Europe Tour flies off on April 7 and goes for just over 2 weeks, I think, so I'll have it out of the way soon.
* And I do take my goldfish v. seriously. I have 360L of tanks plus another 300L of pond. In my opinion, it's almost more maintenance than having one or two cats. I took them on because my brother's asthmatic and can't cope with furry creatures. So...fortnightly 25% water changes...you do the math...plus extras in breeding season. Although, I've been giving my brother money to do some of the cleaning, it works :p
* Yes, I'm thinking of slowing down on my web pursuits, like my LiveJournal...in fact I've been looking to delegate my website to some youngster who has no idea of how to do layouts but has some good ideas in her (yes, preferably a female webmistress would be handy) head...
* My parents recently informed me that I will not be allowed to continue weekly lessons after term 1 for violin, so that's pretty much going to be just plain orchestra work (which is easy anyway)
* No, I'm not doing music for the HSC (My parents believe it's too subjective and I don't really have enough talent to compete with the really really really good kids up there at the top)

Just out of curiosity here, did anybody do their AMus in the senior years? Or, has anybody found their AMus to be useful on a CV? I figured if I did it, come uni, I might be able to give some lessons to little kids or something...

Ok your still young (well younger than us anyway) So those things seem like big things, however when you're actually in yr11 you'll learn to organise your time. Like, i regretted doing more extra curicular in yr11 eventhough i did a far swag of things, i would have like to do more. So yes, dont drop your extra curicular stuff, but maybe tone it down a bit in yr12, if it seems to be impacting on ur marks.

Let's do the glitterfairy equivalents:
1. Dancing (examwork and competitively)
2. Musical (NOT one of the high school variety - go RAPA)
3. L's
4. Sewing (bane of my existence)
5. Inapplicable
6. Inapplicable
7. Fellow msn addict
8. Singing lessons

I personally think that you should be able to either give up, pass on or severly restrict yourself with the website. If you're not getting paid for it... furthermore, I imagine most people write in their journals. If you find yourself too busy one day, then just don't do it... the sky isn't going to fall down on you if *gasp* you don't write in your live journal!!

Many of my friends are currently still in training or did their AMus during Yr 12 (yes, not even Yr 11!!!). I didn't do music, but I did dance (and am still dancing). I also did it competitively, which meant I could easily clock up 10 hrs a week - and that doesn't count all the pre-big-competition vibes that tend to unsettle you for the week before a competition (I do both troupe and solo but with a much greater emphasis on solo eg McDonald's Performing Arts Challenge). I also did a musical production during Yr 11, - based in an area about an hour's drive away from me, I trekked all the way there and back, twice a week for 9 months. It's not something I'd say is for everybody - even though it did have a 9 month rehearsal time it was still a comparatively small show to the one I'd done the previous year. And for the record, I went to a selective school that did not support dancers- not a performing arts school that does support dancers - so I got absolutely no slack from my school whatsoever.

I also was clocking hours for the L's, and as many people have said previously, you really only need to do an hour or so a week. Msn I'd leave - I always have it on when I do assignments or anything... you end up with an msn study group :D. As for the sewing, there is always sewing to do at my house... whether it's alterations, or repairs, or costumes (mum was seriously thinking of quitting her day job at one point, there was just SO much to do... stage costumes were absolutely flooding out lounge room and dining room)... and guess who gets roped into doing it...?!?!?!?!!!!

In conclusion:

I managed probably an equal amount as you're going to through Yr 11. But, I would also suggest that you cut down whatever you do. From about 25 hours of dance a week, I cut down to 10 or so, and then 2 or so hours for Yr 12. In other words, I was "only doing" ten hours, which for me was very little. If you're only used to doing 15 hours, then cut down to "only" eight or so.

It really depends on how much you're able to cope with and how good a time manager you are. I found that the regular "stuff" I did actually forced me to do my work when I got it, otherwise it would build up to impossible proportions. It also kept me somewhat sane - I would go absolutely bonkers if I didn't have something outside of school to really pour myself into

And finally, you seem to be significantly smarter than me, so you should have less problems keeping up :) But a general rule of thumb - don't think, just do. Yr 11 will be over in a flash. You never really know whether it's too much until you do it, and if you do find it too much, then just drop something. Otherwise, I say hang onto as much as you can - because you REALLY will not be able to do that much next year - you will probably have to cut it into half, at least.

Best wishes!

No problem continuing them all into year 11! I did if not more then the same as you -- soccer two nights and Saturday, horseriding one afternoon and most Sundays (usually more), and clocked 50+ hours (plus a written off car) for my L's in 6 months. AND had a livejournal :p. AND horribly neglected my website. And I had no problems (except weekends when I had an assessment due and I was competing Saturday/Sunday, but I dealt with it).

And I'm even taking all of that into year 12 -- if it gets too much, then I can cut back.

lol. Oh yes. You couldn't drag me away from it with a dull knife.

It's just a matter of finding enough of that mythical balance - sure, you need to do well enough in the HSC and keep up, but hello, all that extra-curricular stuff... lol. Cut it down by all means, but don't cut it out - you'll regret it. I know friends that cut out their extra curricular stuff this year, and they went absolutely bonkers. It's weird, but after you juggle everything for so long, you feel so empty when you have nothing but school to look forward to :S

Psh I know people who've juggled twice as much as that and have come out with great results. Websites are fairly useless, having a vague interest in that area will most likely be counter-productive to anything you do in computing subjects. Keep the LJ, it's good to have an outlet. You'll learn some self-discipline in the next year or you'll not do so well in year 12.
