hmmm
Laz, have u ever heard of cases where the school screws up badly in admin and gives you the wrong rank? apparently my school sends out a letter after the hsc and its basically an academic report of the student throughout their hsc and it has their ranks, but thats AFTER the ranks have been sent into the UAC, so any fixing of errors after that will be useless in terms of rectifying the uai

The Freedom of Information Act 1989 (NSW) instils in every citizen a right:

(a) to obtain access to information held by an agency, and

(b) to ensure that records held by an agency concerning the personal affairs of members of the public are not incomplete, incorrect, out of date or misleading.

There are a number of nice summaries available:

Yes. The Board is always willing to correct ranks (once the school has provided the updated data), and your UAI would be recalculated accordingly.

The Rules and Procedures for 2004 HSC Candidates also includes the following (p15):

21. Assessment ranking appeals

(i) After the last HSC examination at your centre, you may request from your principal a sheet showing your rank order for assessment in each course. These will also be available via Students Online. If you feel that your placement in any course is not correct, you should talk to your teacher and you may apply to your principal for a review/appeal.
There is really no reason for schools to refuse to provide students with progressive ranks.

This issue has also been previously discussed here.

Hence the rank reporting on your reports.
I think the issue here is when do they report ranks not that they wont just hand over ranks ... they have to give ranks in the HSC year on the two reports you get (1/2 yearly and end of course) but to give progressive rankings (eg after every assessment task) is another question. (it is a "pain" to work out for large courses-note the " " plus they do change so why constantly report them?)-hence the two times a year...
Does vary from school to school though (depends on how they do their record keeping as more school move towards specialist reporting/recording systems)
As Laz pointed out, realistically, schools dont have to give ranks out until after the final HSC assessment.

So basically, because my school is tight, we only get our ranks if I piss my school off with an official application, otherwise I get ranks after the last HSC exam?

Retarded! pfft..

How bout prelim?

they should be reporting when you get your report (does that make sense) ie have you received your half yearly report yet (based on the exams you *should* have just completed)?
If you have and there are no ranks, I would be asking serious questions..........

I remember my prelim report
We had no rank info cept for english.
The rest were just assessment marks, which is, as aforementioned - meaningless.

most schools that I know of had ranks on the prelim then took them off for various reasons.main one was that it was not required........

as for half yearly reports, Im guessing that *most* havenot received them yet (or are in the stages of receiving them) so maybe we are panicking a little too soon?

Well imo if ur ranked low enough to have reason to be sad, you'd likely wouldn't care in the first place.

Damn this sux.. other "better" schools have a sheet on a wall in the main quad or something and its updated fortnightly with the ranks of everyone in yr 11 and 12. Farout...

I haven't asked for my rank to be displayed to me confidentially but I doubt they'll give it to me. But legally can they keep my rank from being shown to ME and only me? Cos I'll be damned if they accidently reverse my digits or add a few zeros onto my rank and submit that to the UAC only to send a letter of apology moments after I see my crappy UAI... *shudder*

i havent read the rest of this thread but:

they should be showing ranks for assessments

they cannot give your ranks they send to the BOS after the end of year 12 before the hsc exams

Ah well
In Modern Hist. the teacher is more than happy to show ranks....
in Yr 10 he'd be passing the sheet with all the rankings of all the students... down to the last... :)

Maybe we'll have to beg each teacher on a case by case basis.
