I've seen that ad on tv. I'm sure that's how many people learned about Utada.

So what I know some people do, is d/l and learn the English version, then listen to the Japanese (because it's pretty much a direct translation). The words will start fitting, and you'll understand the song/s perfectly :)

hehe i have every single release plus the dvds imported :)

its not the translation that gets me, rather practising the very notion japanese :)

...and the majority of her songs differ quite a lot from the japanese=english versions. ex Hikari and Simple and Clean.

For the purposes of this thread we are all in Taiwan. (where people go "Copyright? What?")

So, is anyone going to [cough] burn [/cough] the above for me? I want to hear what you're all listening to, since I haven't heard anything out of Japan since "konya tsuki no mieru oka ni" and "darling darling" (or even the Pokemon themes).

N00b - How can Kingdom Hearts be too hard? It's just Final Fantasy dumbed down, with Disney! Easy!

That's a strange mix! M-Flo & BoA! Are you talking about their song, "the love bug"?

I disagree - I listened to the English version of Simple and Clean last night, and it was quite similar to the J version. The J one "sounds" a lot more complicated, but it is a relatively close translation :p

Simple and Clean - Utada Hikaru

When you walk away
You don't hear me say please
Oh baby, don't go
Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight
It's hard to let it go

You're giving me too many things
Lately, you're all I need
You smiled at me and said,

Don't get me wrong I love you
But does that mean I have to meet your father?
When we are older you'll understand
What I meant when I said "No,
I don't think life is quite that simple"

When you walk away
You don't hear me say please
Oh baby, don't go
Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight
It's hard to let it go

[so simple and clean]
The daily things [like this and that and what is what]
That keep us all busy
Are confusing me
That's when you came to me and said,

Wish I could prove I love you
But does that mean I have to walk on water?
When we are older you'll understand
It's enough when I say so
And maybe some things are that simple

When you walk away
You don't hear me say please
Oh baby, don't go
Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight
It's hard to let it go

Hold me
Whatever lies beyond this morning
Is a little later on
Regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all
Nothing's like before

Hold me
Whatever lies beyond this morning
Is a little later on
Regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all
Nothing's like before

i think its quite deeper in the hikari rather than just being "complicated"

But you just compared Simple and Clean (English version) to Hikari (Japanese version) - how can you tell that there is any difference? They are different songs :p (And yes, I saw the English lyrics under Hikari also).

oh sorry :)

i meant to say "that the japanese original versions , ie hikari, were much deeper and retained a mch more meaningful undertone compared to that of the english versions, ie simple and clean" ^^

It's my thread now! :p

Hmm, I think I'll be all trendy and create a Politician account. Maybe I'll be Koizumi, or Blair.

[sees shivering emoticon]

Aw... [hug]

Which uni are you going to again? Macq? Sometime during VC week I suppose. Wanna come to the EGG LAN on Friday? (Electronic Gamers' Guild) I'll probably be there. Everyone is welcome, if you want to play it's $15 for non-members.

I'm not sure whether you're saying it was a statement of the obvious or you were offended.

If "statement of the obvious"...then no, not really.

If offended, I'm sorry. It was meant to engender a knowing chuckle rather than offence, and I apologise. :(
