Dear Students,

The following message is also available at http://mymqdown.its.mq.edu.au.

At 2pm Friday 20th July the myMQ portal (student portal) and email upgrade will commence. During the upgrade the student portal page will be replaced by an upgrade status page. The new student portal and email will be available from Monday 23rd July.

Google Apps and Gmail
Your student email address will not change however you will have more storage space (2 GB) and access to Google Apps providing services to help you organise information and communicate and collaborate with others. The Google Apps link will be located in the new student portal at https://my.mq.edu.au

Log in to the Student Portal
Your student portal log in remains unchanged: use your StudentID and your student portal password.

Log in to Google Apps
Log in to Google Apps using your student email account (first.last @students.mq.edu.au). Use the same password that you use to log in to the student portal.

Unlike the current service that requires only a single username to log in to both the student portal and email, the new service requires two different usernames for the student portal and Gmail. This is an interim loss of functionality which will be rectified within four weeks. Our aim was to make the new system available from the beginning of semester and the different usernames was a small and temporary compromise.

Mail Forwarding and Email Contacts
Gmail will not automatically import your current student mail settings. You need to create mail forwarded rules in Gmail when you first log in to Gmail. Similarly you will need to create your contacts in Gmail: these will not be automatically imported from your existing student mail service.

Changes to the myMQ Student Portal
The student portal https://my.mq.edu.au is changing to a new technology platform with existing functionality plus new features.

New Student Portal Log In/Log Out
The log in/log out function has been moved to the grey banner below the images. Click on the link and log in with your usual student portal username and password.

Layout and Content
Changing the layout and content is no longer available however within the Google Apps you will be able to create your own content on the
Start Page (also known as iGoogle) using Google Gadgets, this available after logging into the Google Apps.

Email and Calendar Services
Email and Calendar services are provided by Google Apps which you can launch from the student portal.

Frequently Asked Questions
A useful FAQ sheet can be found at http://www.its.mq.edu.au/studserv/gmail.html with the answers to the frequently asked questions.

There are a number of online resources that provide detailed information about Google Apps. You can visit the Google Apps Help Center at http://www.google.com/support/a/users to start browsing, and check out the video presentations that are linked below.

We hope you will enjoy Google Apps, your new student email and calendar system. We welcome your feedback via the forms within myMQ portal which may assist in identifying any problems and enhancements in the next release.

Yours sincerely,
Mary Sharp

Looks like they actually listened to our advice!

i am looking forward to the extra space.

sucks to lose 3 days of emailing, but i see it as a chance to stop organising stuff for a while. phew. and semester hasn't even started yet...

looks like it wont get fixed until tuesday...

btw, the website's certificate seems to have some problems, is that because the server's misconfiguration or is it a normal part of the upgrade?

I find it funny that nothing ever runs to schedule. Not just uni, everywhere. Including when I decide to do things.

It's like our uni's run by a bunch of Greek labourers.

Is okay. We fix it by tomorrow, or dey after. Little bit here *waves hand* and bit of plaster there and should be done like Ma's souvlaki.
(a year later) Yes, we do it by tomorrow or dey after.

... It's just a better email system. I thought they were going to integrate the different components more. :(
