Can anyone help me with thse questions ????

The following questions relate to components Affecting Food Choices in Australia

a) discuss global migration of cultural groups

b) outline developments in production and manufacturing

c) describe changes in marketplace practices

d) discuss government policies such as tarriffs, embargoes and subsidies

sorry my notes are very comlex so basically

-development of steam & diesel created less work more automated
-mostly women & children did these jobs (minor eg, peeling fruit for conserves)
-salt used to preserve early, now preserving chemicals added in production of foods
-introduction of refridgeration created easier storage therefore production became larger due to more able to produce "fresh" foods
- HMRs, Take-aways & MREs

Australia = A Multicultural Society
To cater for our society we import products from around the world.
Local producers are shielded by the Government under the protection policy.

Protection – any action a country takes to give domestic producers an advantage over imported goods.

Tariffs
A tax imposed on imported goods as they enter the country.
Items can be produced cheaper overseas, so tariffs bring the prices of imported good into line with those goods produced here.
The amount of tariff imposed depends on the country of origin.
Free Trade Agreement: between NZ, PNG and FIJI, resulted from government agreements.
Trade agreements result in reduced tariffs.

This encourages trade with developing countries. Tariffs for developing countries are usually 5% lower than of other countries.


+ Embargoes
Is a total restriction or ban on the import of a particular commodity. An extreme form of protection.
They are used when political actions of one country towards another are not accepted.
Eg, Iraqi exports were not allowed into Aus. During the Gulf War.
They are also used when food products from another country are found to be unsafe to eat


+ Subsidies
A subsidy is a cash payment by the Government to the local producer for the producer to reduce their selling price and compete better with the imported products.
Buyers will always purchase products that give them value for money.

+ Import and export strategies
The General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (the G.A.T.T.) used to maintain guarantees

+ Taxation
Tax is the Government fee that consumers pay.
GST = Goods and Services Charge
GST is 10% but not charges on all food.
GST free-food is unprocessed food including fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, meat and bread
