I studied this text in Year 10, but I'd say that it is an imaginative journey in that the animals teach themselves to read, write, talk, walk, and generally do stuff that they're not "supposed" to do.
Readers imagine animals controlling humans, instead of the other way around, however there is a twist in that the animals act a helluva lot like humans (in general), and so imagining such a thing is not that hard to do.
