I really need help deciding whther I should do a double degree. I hav interest in both commerce and science and thought that this would b the perfect degree. Howeva everyone is disagreeing with my decision and saying that their aren't many job opportunities. Yet I thought doing two degrees will help me specialise in two different areas and hence increase my job opportunities. I really need help and I only hav one more day to decide. PLease help

It's a very compatible degree. Heck you don't have to do 'compatible' majors, some people are doing 'interesting' combinations. You can do totally different things in each degree if you want!

Based on my experience with fellow Comm/Sci People, the most popular majors that people pick in this program are accounting/biotech, finance/biotech, maths/finance, maths/actuarial and something-commerce/psych. I don't see many people doing Geology/Accounting unfortunately, but hey, you could be the first!

Yes, in Commerce/Science you can pick up a career from either field, or combine them. You'll find that people who think Commerce is all about $$$, and Science is all about Research are the ones that cannot fathom how such a combination came about. In reality, science is driven by $$$, and there is a science behind commerce. OK, I'm twisting things a little here, but you get my point -they are not two mutually exclusive fields.

If you are really unsure, here is some practical advice, pick up Commerce/Science. You can always drop back to Science or plain old Commerce with a simple form, but going the other way requires you to go back through UAC etc.

^^spot on

the important thing is to find good complementary majors. biotech happens to be the way of the future but whether or not its compatible with a commerce major is still up in there. because there are better job prospects in the business side of things, the best way to think about is what will enhance your grad prospects.

but then again, do you what you like. do what you enjoy. im doing something i hate and ive regretted doing com/sci but we're all different.

it is a great degree, especially in unsw... im doing it and i have a accounting/psychology majors... which are totally unrelated i chose this degree because im still not sure what i want to do... and by doing a double degree it lets me experience both sides and then i come out of university with betta prospects cos then i maybe able to go into commerce or science side...especially since its only 4 years for a double degree... whereas elsewhere the same degree is 5 years...

I would recommend doing a double degree, such as Com/Sci, over a straight degree anyday. There are lots of benefits.

As for being in uni longer, well, alot of my straight BCom friends are transfering into double degrees or attempting to do honours in order to delay their entrance into the workforce :p

i keep reading in fin review that the majority of graduates (for finance, banking etc.) are now going for positions with a minimum of two or three undergrad degrees and/or honours. its becoming a competitive world. it has been mentioned before that an arts degree isnt worth much more than toilet paper but surely (and especially if they have a language major) its better than a straight degree?

if you like the degrees, then do it :) don't base the next four years of your life on some random junk people say because it's total bullshit.

some commerce majors are better off complemented with a science one (ie. actuarial/maths or marketing/psychology) and even if they aren't complemented it'll still give you some diversity while you're in uni.

sounds like theres a positive vibe that bcom/bsci is a compatible degree, plus doesnt it sound logical that u will have job opportunities from commerce area AND science area!? mmm

actually a bachelor of science degree on its own is a pretty dead end program to do unless you get a dip. ed. and become a teacher. you can either work in a lab or go on to further studies, and the demand for lab workers is nothing compared to the demand for business/engo grads.
