In that case....the router in the ADSL modem has kicked off automatically.

There is no way to use a hub/switch alone as a routing device. In your case the router inside the ADSL modem is being used, which is connected to your switch.

Well the thing is, each computer is separately connecting to the internet, I have to "dial-in" everytime I want to connect to the internet.

It's basically like using 56k dialup, except when I dial up I got a 512/128 speed.

Pretend you bought a normal ADSL modem without any built in routing. Typically, you'd connect a network cable from the modem to your ethernet card, then connect to the internet.

Same situation with me. Except both computers can individually dial in.

Though I could still be wrong. I don't know too much about routers except my friend bought a $600 one to share his 56k around which was pointless...

The builtin router is definately at work. For starters, when you dial up, which computer will get assigned the ISP IP address without a router? Normally the second network card would get this IP if there was only one computer.

Then even if one of the computers get the external IP address, there is nothing to route the incoming packets back at the right computer. You could be sending out packets saying 'reply to 192.168.1.1' which is a private IP address.

You could of course be paying extra for multiple IP addresses.

It is possible to plug a 4 port switch into an ADSL modem (not a router) and connect the NIC of each computer to that switch, and connect each computer to the internet by using software like RasPPPoE like Ragerunner does.

What happens is that as each computer connects, it is assigned its own external IP address (so the ISP is supplying two or more IP addresses to one user). This is only possible if the ISP allows it (iiNet, Netspace, and a few other ISPs allow you to have up to 4 IP addresses for free whenever you're unshaped i.e. under your download limit), and this is known as multiple PPPoE logins and is quite different from using a router.

You willl also need 3 ethernet cables in total (one for modem -> router, one for router -> computer1, one for router -> computer2)

Yeah good way to go... consider a D-Link it's nice.. and the one i got has 4-Port and also Wireless, i got it for 150, but now i can get it for 135, since it's been a while anyways.
