i bought a new router for the my network, which is connected to a few computers, a printer and my cable modem

at first everything goes well, then after 30 minutes, my internet connection shuts off completely and i have to restart the router and modem

maybe it is because i have yet to setup the router settings (http://ROUTER IP)
im not sure how to fill in the details

and i also need help setting up the home network thing. i followed the instructions on my main computer and then i had to save a file onto the disk and install it on the other computers, but on the other computers, it says the network doesnt exist.

this is my first time with networks...please help

My netgear router / adsl modem is awesome, when I reformat all I have to do is plug it in and I can use the internet straight away without having to worry about connection passwords etc because that info is stored in a netgear database or something :D!

optus cable should be fine.
Everything should be totally DHCP.

u might have to restart the modem for the DHCP to kick in.

best to ask someone with a similar connection, or try whirlpool.

I'm on optus and my router is setup to the following:

Internet connection: all dhcp

Home Network:
DHCP is enabled, with static DNS entries. (you will have to find this out somehow) mainly with an ipconfig /all in a DOS Prompt.

you probably don't need to use the XP home setup wizard.
Just DHCP all ur computers, and keep it to the same WORKGROUP.

few trouble shooting stuff:

make sure all computers can ping the router as well as the other computers on your network.
depending on ur starting DHCP IP Address, good to give a few ipconfig /release and /renew just to make sure ur DHCP server is working.

also ping websites from all computers.

printer - sorry, no idea

It's where IP addresses eg. 192.168.0.1 - is assigned automatically

it's like ur computer's identification on a network, so other computers know where to send the data to.

your router should be 192.168.0.1
and computers should be 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3, etc...

if u need help, MSN/ICQ me. I'll be more than willing to try help out.

is yours a 504g? i have one and i hate it.

my dlink router ip is 10.0.0.1 (even though the manual said 10.1.1.1, dlink  )

when your pc boots up do start -> run -> cmd.exe then ipconfig /all at the dos prompt and make sure you have a 10.0.0.x address.

sometimes if you order your modem/router through your isp they will put in your settings for you. if you got it from the store or from ebay or wherever youll have to enter them yourself.

ive bought two dlink things now and both have been shitty, nevar again.
